    Fine tuning

Now that Ive got my bike running for the most part its time to focus on the little issues with the bike.

    1. Bike doesn't run well until its nice and hot, till that point ive got to pull the choke out to really get up to speed.

    2. Backfires, whether it be at idle or during deacceleration. Sorry I should use the term "afterfires" as it comes from the exhaust.

    3. It sounds like the left side cylinders or cylinder keeps cutting out, I can hear the exhaust on the left side and then at certain points I cant hear the exhaust and then I can hear it kick in, and as soon as I hear it I also feel it. I believe I have a bad plug wires which may be causing issues.

I need to have the carbs vaccummed synced but I have no clue how to on my bike. I also need to adjust the valves, which thanks to bikecliff I can do, but where can I find shims?

Where is a good place to get spark plug wires? I cant seem to find an OEM fit but I may not be looking good enough.

Critical, you need to get valves adjusted to spec or you're just
    "chasin' yer tail".

What is spec for an 80 GS850?

What he said, start at the beginning, work through to the end, enjoy a beautifully running bike for another 35 years or so.

It's all easy stuff. Everything you need is here:

1 and 2 indicate you are lean on the pilots. As noted, get your valves set correctly, then synch the carbs, then start chasing down the issues. Were the carbs dipped and cleaned properly?

Since no one has mentioned it, many later model Suzuki coils/wires will fit. I have a set of mid 90's GSXR600 coils and wires on my '82 1100E and they bolted right up to the mounting studs like they were meant to. Bought mine off fleabay for a very reasonable price a few years ago.

Sounds like you don't have a manual. Download one or buy a hardcopy version, either way you are going to need it to get your bike running right.

I found a kit on Z1 where you can make your own wires. Im not sure I need coils. Ill check my valve settings tomorrow and order shims as needed as well as the tool.

My main issue is Im not sure exactly what Im dealing with this bike. The title says 1979, the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the frame. But the carbs are CV style from the 80 model. VIN number is GS850103027, The engine stamp is GS850-126474. Can anyone tell me what model I have?

It sounds like you have an early '80 model, manufactured in late '79.

That's what I thought, Ive been ordering parts for an 80 gs850 G with no problems.

I initially had issues because I was going off the 79 VM carb info, so I had the wrong jets in it.

Does it have electronic ignition, as opposed to points?

I believe so. It has two coils under the gas tank, two wires on one each coil.

                      1980 should be electronic.

Can you remove the old wires from the coils and install new wires? My coils and wires don't look like they are meant to come apart.

Yes, you can replace the wires. Lots of pertinent info in various threads from the archives.
