    Has one seen this done to an intake?

    Ok, so my GS650 doesn't idle properly, so I looked for a vacuum leak using some contact clean and sure enough, the bike starts reving when I spray near the intake/head connection. No biggie new O-Rings ordered and on their way.

    When I was looking at the intakes, they feel pliable (I have nothing to compare it too though.), but they look different from other bikes. The rubber doesn't continue all the way down to the intake. Is this normal?

    To check for a leak I was thinking or plating off both ends, and putting alittle preasure on it (say 5) PSI, and then soap and water on the outside to look for bubbles.

    I've seen that, on boots that are on the way to the garbage can. Looks like an air leak to me.

      Are you asking if that intake boot is the correct one for your bike? Yes, it is.

      That being said, you can certainly get a leak where the carb sits in the intake boot as they get a little old and slightly stiff. In some cases, the rubber separated from the metal plate, and eventually becomes obvious, or will outright tear off.

      As the rubber heats up, microcracks can get larger, but I'm willing to wager you'll get a marked improvement by replacing the intake o-rings.

      Oh yes, there should also be a washer between the screw in that vacuum port and the rubber. You can get deformation and a leak there if it is missing.

        He's asking if it's normal or not to see the rubber coating missing from the base metal of the intake. And yes it's normal but it also means the boots are garbage as tkent stated. I second the air leak assumption. All 4 of the original ones on my 850 just got replaced as all were leaking. And the previous owner couldn't figure out why the bike was acting funny.......

          Yes, I believe you are right. Thanks for the clarification.

          On my 650, there was a little bit of rubber gone from a couple of the boots, but they were not leaking there, yet. I did take advantage of a huge sale on some new ones for the moment when the rubber eventually separates at the metal.

            As a very temporary fix till you can get new intake manifolds, you can seal the edges with some RTV and let it cure over night before reinserting the carbs. It will work for a while and at least keep you riding till such time that you can do the change over.

            I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

              Ok Thanks for the confirmation. Looks like I will be ordering a new set of intakes shortly. Gives me time to check the values, and timing..
