    Petrol tap issue (or not!)

    Hello all.
My first post on this excellent site.

I have a GS500E (bought as an incomplete bike but then good old fleabay helped find the missing headlight and exhaust).
Then fell for a GS650GT in boxes (theme developing? ...) but with a newly powder coated frame. Someone else's stalled rebuild.

Then most recently a GS850G in non-running but pretty complete state.
Not sure of year ("lost paperwork") but maybe you can help?
    Engine number GS850-155***
    Frame number GS850-131***

When I say pretty complete - it is missing one key component.
The choke lever (and cable socket) that appears to bolt under the lefthand switchgear.
Have just got a threaded but empty hole - and a cable waving in fresh air!

I'm in the UK - so by any chance has anyone here got this bit?

Finally. Petrol tap was stuck solid. Unbolted from tank.
Filter completely covered by a layer of orange 'lacquer' from old fuel.
Dismantled tap (watch for flying tiny springs ...).
Plastic rotatable heart would NOT rotate. Stuck fast.
Even after 24 hour soaking in WD40.
So - put alloy body in a cup and poured boiling water in until it covered just the alloy casting. Left for 20 minutes.
Poured cooled water away and refilled as before.
Ten minutes later, removed and found plastic valve was freed up and removable. Result.
Don't be tempted to remove the 'internal' stainless steel spring that operates by lifting the diaphragm when tap turned to Reserve.

The diaphragm was fine but the tiny O-ring that seals against a taper was semi-dissolved.
    20p bought a new one.

Orange coloured lacquer blocking very fine pores in filter mesh was removed by careful brushing with cellulose thinners.
It did not dissolve the plastic filter/housing.
Can now see through the mesh and blow through it.

Regarding the year of your bike: with the "choke" control on the left handgrip, it is '82 or newer.

Nice detail on the petrol tap work, not sure if there was a question hidden in the narrative.

      Hi Steve

      24,000 + posts. Truly amazing.

My only two questions were :-
Year of the bike so I can chase up some replacement paperwork.
Here in the UK it seems to be quite common for non-running bikes to be passed around and then rediscovered - but with no paperwork.
This bike has chromed tubular handle around rear of seat and black plastic-bodied indicators if that helps with ID.

Anyone got a choke (or even a complete GS850G switch unit) ?
Will put this in the Wanted section when I can identify year of bike.

Regarding gummed up tap. Carb slides were also stuck or sticky and when removed there was a green gooey deposit around the normal fuel level on the needle itself. Here in UK the 5% ethanol content (forced on the Government by Green activists) is causing big headaches with vintage cars, over-wintered bikes ... and lawnmowers!

        The bobbies wouldn't like that.

        There is irony there somewhere...

Our activists are greener here... we've got up to 10% or more ethanol (but with the option to buy 100% gasoline in some places still).
