    Dynojet kit for a 1980 GS550?

Hey folks, at some point I'll need a stage 3 Dynojet kit for the 550. Looking at their website, the closest bike would be the '82 GS550 Katana. Anyone here used that kit for the earlier model?

    Thanks in advance.

You can use that '82 kit no problem.

I've used it and it was FAR from "plug and play". The only thing that ended up working in my system were the needles. The mains are far larger than your bike can handle, even with pods. You're going to struggle to make that kit work.

Very interesting because I was going to ask this exact same question! I did some research on both the Katana 550 and the GS 550 and the bore / stroke / compression ratio is exactly the same. I figured it would work, but why would the mains be too much for the GS 550 to handle? The only other possibility would be something contributing to higher air flow on the Katana that the GS does not have- larger valves, ect. but the HP specs are both 50 hp so I don't see anything that could be different between the two models?

No idea, but they are. The smallest main in the kit is a DJ 150, which is equivalent to a Mikuni 140.

The Katana 550 engine and carbs are identical to the regular 550. It seems odd that the kit wouldn't fit all years with CV carbs.

                Revive! 1980 gs550l - i want to do a stage 3!

Looking to revive this old thread because I don't think it came to a good resolution.

I have a 1980 GS550L with a MAC 4-1 header, wrapped. I have turned it into something of a Brat/cafe look. This bike is more for my enjoyment in building/tinkering. I want to put pod air filters on it for the hell of it. Because it looks cool. I am not worried about the amount of work required. I enjoy working on the bike more than I do riding it to be honest.

I have searched the internet carefully and it seems to be a 50/50 split on whether the DynoJet Stage 3 kit for the 1982 GS550M-Katana will work on the 1980 GS550 CV carburetors with header and pod air filters.. I am completely aware that these GS bikes have a great reputation of being well tuned at stock configuration, but I don't care. I want to modify it.

SO, I am confident that when it comes to most engines that given enough time, money and knowledge just about anything is possible.

Does anyone know what needs to be done to make this Dynojet kit work on my 1980 GS550? From what I read the 1982 GS550 Katana has effectively the same exact set up (engine/carbs, etc..)

Thank you in advance. All I ask is that if you don't have hands on experience with this request then just don't respond.

PS. This is the Kit: https://www.z1enterprises.com/product/DJ3314

How about researching for yourself? Compare the engine specs between your 1980 against the 1982? Then compare the carb specs? All the information is there just waiting for you to research. The factory service manual can be downloaded from Basscliff's website and there are all kinds of factory parts fishe available to see if the part numbers are the same.

Good luck with your search and please update us on what you find.

A dynojet kit stage 3 in a GS550 bobber? HA!
What you'll get is a slobber bobber.
Just shim the needles a couple washers, and that's all it can drink.

Thanks for the resources Mr. Nessism! I'll be reading up on this throughout the weekend.

All I know is that my bike certainly needs tuned even without the pods. I can tell there is power hidden somewhere that I need to liberate.

                      Thanks for the help!
