Compatible exhausts for the 1100 16 valve mill

Hey everyone. Good to be back after a period of absents due to work and family commitments. Always a pleasure reading the posts from all you GS owners out there. I've learnt a great deal and put much of it to work keeping my trusty Katana 1000sz (owned sinced 1986, and dragged around the globe) on the road and working like a dream. Thank you !!

I've collected 2 other Katanas in the meantime, an 83 1100 from Germany, and a Canadian spec 750 SD.

I'm in a position now where I need to start thinking about replacing the exhaust on the 1100 and though the internet is helpful where Vince and Hines, and MAK are concerned I'm not really finding any other choices for the 1100, 16v engine. I'm always excited when I see project bikes or even standard road going machines sporting really sexy exhausts but try as I might I can't discover where these gifted individuals have uncovered such gems.

I've searched the forums but no really concrete information appears to be offered. (Forgive me if I'm wrong and there's a really good post out there that I've over-looked. Blame it on my cataracts!!)

So, the request is this....would all you builders and non builders alike like to share with us what exhaust system you have found that work with our beloved 1100's? Who's the manufacturer/builder? did you use a unit from another later machine and tricked it into place, did you use a MAK header then graft on a silencer? What modifications did you make to enable whatever you chose to work? Are you happy with the results ??....As much detailed info as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance and wishing you safe and trouble-free biking !!

If I was even thinking about an exhaust for an 1100, I would grab at least one of these. You will not be disappointed.

I have a Bassani marked GS1000 on the muffler {sort of} on my 83 Katana 1100 that came with the bike. I tried a Vance & Hines that I had on my 80 GS1100 so the oil could be changed without dropping the pipe and the rear pipe hit the frame. With the Bassani you not only cant change the filter you cant even get the drain plug out. Its too radical for my back anyway

I did not realize that these headers were spring mounted with Billet spigots. The one on the Katana doesn't have them, but the picture of the pipe alone and the text states it comes with.

This is a nice feature, that I have on my franken yoshi as well.

So oil changes with total pipe removal are not really a problem.

Someone just sold one of these on Ebay for $100.00 MORE than he paid for it.
Again, it is a bargain at the price that motorgpwerks sells them for. I just bought a second one this morning myself.

Thanks for the link. I've been checking these out on ebay. They really are sweet exhausts. Problem for now is shipping to Canada adds a fair chunk of change to the price. Waiting for the PR card to turn up so I can cross the border and save a few dollars if I decide to go this route. You're right though, it really is a bargain.

Are you familiar with any pipes that may work from other model years regarding fitment and such ? I know that the exhaust forms an integral part of the over-all state of tune of the engine but I'm just wondering whether the exhaust off a bike like the GSXR 1100 or 750 from the early/mid 80's with a bit of modification and some re-jetting could be worth investigating. Obviously taking your advice along with Posplayr's makes the most financial sense but in the event these pipes become unavailable ( MotorGPwerks do state limited quantities in the listing) what other course of action do we have?

I've checked out the Bassani, (Thanks Katarat) and they do "look" good but I don't think they're available anymore. Still, accomplishing basic service needs hindered by their very design make this kind of system a last resort.

Thanks all for the input so far. I'll keep checking back and see what this post uncovers.

              Safe riding !!

This is a later model 4-valve Katana exhaust system that I made work on one of my 1100G's. Larger flanges and collars and cutting/welding were required but, I LOVE it!
Not any interest at all here when I posted the pictures/progress. Apparently too many members are older than their age suggests or just stuck in their ways?

With some rear hanger work most any GSXR 1st gen 1100 exhaust will work. Also depending upon the exhaust most all 2nd gen 1100 exhausts work as well. See my so; 2nd gen 4:2:1 yoshi from 1100. By the time I was done I still spent close to $600 on the pipe.

That shows a great deal of ingenuity. Not a bad looking pipe really. What are the tubes across the down pipes? cross-over/ balance pipes ? OR.....?

I see that you love it so I won't ask how it performs. Thanks for the pic.

That's great info, thanks. I kinda thought that messing around trying to make something fit would add some extra expense and sometimes more than if you go buy one ready made.

I'll keep my eye on the mail and hope my residency card turns up soon. It looks like I might be making a trip to the US. Not such a bad idea though as there are some fantastic roads along the West Coast. Just hope the weather holds out.

                      Cheers !!
