    Replacement Petcock on a 1981 GS850G?

    Hi all,

About a month ago, I had no idea what I was doing with my bike. I needed to clean the carbs and basically take the whole bike apart and check everything. The bike ran pretty well, but upon taking it part, I realized I needed all new intake hoses, air box hoses, and the like. Thanks to all of you guys and your DIY encouragement, I decided to learn everything I needed to fix it all myself. Everything is done now, except for one thing: The petcock seems to have a slight leak. I suspected this might be the problem, because an oil/gas mix was spitting up into my air box from the crank case heather tube before I took the bike apart. I discovered the leak before I put the tank back on the cleaned bike (I sat it over a storage bin and filled it with fuel to check for the leak). I know that I've fixed everything else down the line, but I figure I might as well pony up and try to find a reliable, new petcock. Problem is, they all look different, and I don't want to make an order without getting your advice. Sorry to have such a lengthy description for such a simple problem, but does anyone know the most reliable source for a new petcock on a 1981 gs850g?

Again though, I have you guys to thank for everything I learned to get this bike back to healthy running order.

    Thanks guys,

    Brian

edit: you need two "sealing washers" under bolts- most decent hardware stores have them about 40 cents each- the 1/4 inch size works nicely on 6mm bolt

Consider getting a bunch of the sealing washers. When I ordered new OEM ones, I wound up with about 10 of them. They're also used on the float bowl drain screws and the secondary drive fill level hole.

Really??? I have never seen them there. I just use the o-rings that come from cycleorings.

I bought some like these from Home Depot. The specs say the flexible part is neoprene which seems to be less that great for gas resistance. Does anyone know if the OEM sealing washers are a better type? I will probably order some but just wanted something to hold me over for a couple of weeks. Is anybody just using the neoprene type?http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Cr...-/140890854566

If you mean under petcock mounting bolts, just get some 1/4 inch sealing washers at decent hardware store- they work fine on 6 mm bolts. Mine have been on 4 years with no problem.

Yeah, this is what I got but i got the exact same thing at Home depot instead of Ebay. I got a pack of 1/4" and a pack of #12. The #12 fit a little snugger so I used them.

I used fiber washers from the hardware store for sealing the petcock bolts on my 850. They haven't leaked yet, but if I had to do it again I'd go with the oem seals or nylon washers. I'm not sure about neoprene's gas resistance and it seems like o-rings would tear under the stress needed to tighten those bolts down a fair amount to get the petcock to seal.

Yes, I ordered some OEM's from Z1 today for peace of mind. For now, the neoprenes are doing okay but it's only been 12 hrs.
