question about valves

Does anyone know if the 1982 GS1100GL uses shims for valve adjustment?

With shims do I still need to check and adjust them? I've done the kind with a gap tool but never shims.

Yes, it uses shims.

Yes, you need to check them.

And you will need to check them AGAIN in about 4000 miles.

You will still need a "gap tool" (usually called "feeler gauges").

Hi Bille,

yes, you need to get into the valve cover, check clearances, and inventory your shims. Once you know what you have, you might be able to swap things around to minimize the number of shims you will have to procure; the Shim Club on here (Ray- member name:Ghostgs1) is one source for them. Remember, do not turn the engine over at all with a shim missing. Get a loaner shim or use a coin to fill the gap.
