What kind of MPG should i be getting? What are you getting?

I finally got me 81 gs1000g running smooth with the exception of bogging down and popping with full throttle (Ive been riding nice and easy to avoid it) and a high idle on the first startup of the day but then it calms down after about 20-30 seconds. I will be doing some fine tuning today but i just want to know what MPG i should be getting. i filled up my 4 gallon tank and ran out at 66 miles. That gives me a 16.5 MPG. I was hoping for at lease a 25-30. What the heii?

Your bike should get in the range of 40 mpg. Seems you have a tuning and/or maintenance issues. The high idle suggests a lean condition, but beyond that I won't venture to guess.

More details please. What have you done to it? What mods are on it?

I don't own a bike that will get 40mpg with me riding it. That said, your numbers are DRASTICALLY lower than they should be.

          +1 on that

Have you been through the carbs? Valves adjusted? Is this bike new to you?

Unless you are riding VERY enthusiastically, 40 mpg should be a MINIMUM.

No mistake I've checked it several times. It cruises with so little throttle input. I was amazed the first few times I checked it. Now if you run it harder or a lot of in town stop and go it does drop some.Plus it only weighs 465#

My 85 GS1150 gets 5 mpg and my 98 Bandit gets the same but you should be getting at least 35 mpg with yours.

That's not so far off, either. I've found that power-tuned engines will return better economy - provided you don't use the extra power, and that's hard to resist. However, if you drive them in semi-eco mode, they really show the benefits of better breathing.

I have Moxy pods, i have gone through the carbs and cleaned them out and replaced parts with K&L kits. I have pulled them apart to find out what size jets i have. My pilot jet is fairly big. the jet that came in my kit has a pin hole in it and the jet i have is much bigger.

I have had the bike for a couple months so i am trying to get the bugs out.

These are my pilot jets. the one on the left says its a 30 and the right one came in my K&L kit and says its a 40. Did some one drill out the 30?

It is usually a mistake to use "carb kits", but it appears that in your case, it might have been necessary. Those "30" pilots have been drilled.

That X-6 jet is not your main, that is the needle jet. The main jet screws into the end of the needle jet (which is also known as an "emulsion tube"). Stock numbers will range from about 95 to 120, depending on what bike you have, but we don't have a clue. (Hint, hint)
