Leaking from over flow

Just tuning up my carbs at the minute and carb #2 seams to be leaking out of the over flow I set the floats to 26mm (book specs between 25-27mm) could it be because I don't have the over flow hoses attached to the carb ? And why only from one

Yes could be worn needle valve or the seat. Try tapping on the float bowl with screwdriver handle, could be float is stuck. Might be catching on float bowl gasket, especially if it's aftermarket.

I'll whip the carbs off and give them a look
just to confirm does it matter that I don't run tubes on the overflows

mine did that a couple times in the past two years, and a tap on the bowl fixed it each time.

Does a 77 750 have a vacuum operated petcock...? and if it does, is the vaccum line connected to the #2 carb (that is overflowing).
If so, disconnect that vacuum line to see if it is the source of the overflow gas. If so then the petcock is the problem.

That GS has VM carbs, so the vacuum line attaches to the #3 carb

I run a pengal ped cock so the vaccum line is plugged but I've still got the one that links carbs together in place

Check fuel level in the carbs, not just float height. Weak float needle springs can allow the fuel to raise about the level expected from setting float height alone.

Tore them down and put them back together and the leak seams to have disappeard maybe it wasn't seating propley or sticking open.
Ill keep an eye on it
