78 GS1000 Needle Spacers
I'm working on a 78 GS1000E that as a DynoJet kit which replaces the OEM needles. My question is should I reinstall the washers that were under the OEM needle clips when I put the DynoJet needles in? The washers are #8 on page 293's exploded view of carbs in the service manual. It seems strange to use the washers, but maybe they keep the clip from contacting the spring that the needle rests on (#7). Why would it seem strange to use the washers?
As you are guessing, it's not so much the contact, it's the possibility that the windings on the spring will work their way past the e-clip on the needle.
Don't forget to put the larger spacer back on top of the clip.

No, it doesn't. It only adds preload to the spring.
The spring pushes the needle up as high as it is allowed to go. The position of the clip and the thickness of the spacer/washer above the clip are what determines the height of the needle.
