    Dynojet help please!!!!

ok...I'm doing a carb rebuild and jet, I bought a stage 3 dyno kit and it keeps saying "refer to chart 1" there is no F'n Chart!!!! oh Christ I'm stressed. the needle is longer than the OEM one and it looks like some one has moved the clip to "try" to adjust for pod filters. also the main jet is smaller than the stock one (they threads it fine just smaller "nut" size) is that normal? to select the main jet "refer to chart 1.....sigh THERE IS NO F"N CHART!!!!!! please help.

Perhaps if you were to mention which model/year bike that you bought the kit for as well as the kit number, someone that has bought the same kit might be able to get you a copy and help?

How were you able to determine the OEM specs on the Jets, needles etc...?

I didn't... the new needle is physically longer and the original is set the 5th slot (which can't be OEM) and "new" ones have 6 slots.

The OEM ones on my 79 550 (VM carbs, as well) have 5 slots. Did the previous owner install the pod filters, and try adjusting the needles to work with them? If he didn't go up in jet size, he might have tried raising the needles all the way up to try to get more fuel in the mid range, to keep it from stumbling when whacking the throttle open, but it wouldn't solve a lean condition at over 3/4 throttle.

Out of curiosity, why are you using a DJ kit for VM carbs? Since the OEM needles are adjustable, and OEM jets are available in a myriad of sizes, it is much cheaper and you can get it very close buy buying individual jets.

BTW, Your original main jet sizes should have been #95, and with individual air filters and exhaust, I would "guess" you should be in the #120 range. Also, if the pods are the cheap emgo type, ditch them and get some decent K&N or UNI filters. The cheapo filters have a ridge that blocks the air jet openings in the carb throat.

Here is a thread I made, elsewhere that explains more about the "why-nots" of pods....at least the cheapies.

I have K&N filters. I bought the bike wih them. It hasn't run right since i bought it though. I bought the DJ kit because I was told that it was really simple to install and would have everything i needed. It would be if the chart was here. i had talked to other folks on this site and was told it was the way to go. would have been cheaper i'm sure just to buy jets tho. ya i was thinking that the last owner "or his tech" tryed to raise the needle to compensate for the pods. I tryed to contact DJ but haven't gotten a reply as of yet. i was hoping that some one here has installed the kit and may have a chart kicking around...the kit comes with 138 Main jets and 142 Main Jets. and as for the needle spaceing i'm at a loss.

Just so you know, the "kits" are not just plug-and-play. The instructions give you a baseline to start with, but you still have to adjust from there. What are the main jet sizes that came in the kit?

Start with the 138 jets, and needles in the center. Do a couple WOT plug chops, and read the plugs to see if they are lean or rich. If they are close to good, adjust the needles for mid range.

Great idea, NOT! That would be the equivalent of you putting 110 main jets into your 550. Try it and see just how well it runs.

My mains are 105's, right now. 102.5's have almost no color. And yes, I was surprised how far I had to go...to the point I was looking for intake leaks. If you read my earlier post, I said he should be in the 120 range, (more likely he will be between 120 and 125). A DJ 138 is equivalent to a 130 Mik jet. Since he has those jets, I suggested trying them. Yes, I think he will be rich, but he can't return the kit, so there wouldn't be any harm in trying it.
