    Running woes after rebuild

I've just rebuilt the engine on my '79 GS400. A year ago I rebuilt the carbys with new seals and she ran ok but blew a lot of smoke on one cyl which is why I've done the engine rebuild. When I pulled the carbys off I just put a rag in them and sat them to one side. I put the bike all back together, was able to rode it 20 meters on the first try and it then stalled. Now I can't get the bike to run off the choke. I can get it started on choke but it soon after starts to labour and then stall. I screwed in the air mixture screws and let them out 1 1/4 turns as the manual says. Any thoughts?

Yeah. The whole bike is completely back together. Ive not modified anything. Could it be the timing? I didn't have a timing light.

Did you set the points and timing manually? does the bike start easily enough but just won't run when the choke is off?

Most of us have done something equally as noobish.
How does it run now that it has fuel?

Blows a lot of smoke at high rpms and wont hold idle, stalls or revs too high. I was going to start a thread on it after xmas.
