    Slide Carbs or CV Carbs

I have a 82' gs550 and wondering if I should pick up some VM carbs for it.

What are your thoughts VM or CV carbs on this bike.

If you're still using the stock airbox, then I'd stick with CVs. Properly jetted and adjusted you just can't beat the crisp throttle response.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

What do you hope to gain by downgrading to the VM carbs?

You would need some adapters to neck down to the smaller VM carbs, as well as changing the right handgrip (throttle assembly) and adapting the "choke" mechanism.

Just sounds like too much work to enable a downgrade, for me.

OK that was all I needed. I'll keep the CV carbs.

I have an 82 gs1100gl and have been looking into RS40 mikuni carbs. I roll an unbaffled 4 to 1 header, and plan to k&n pods. The individual who owned this bike previously had no filtration at all, which is not my cup of tea. Does anyone have any experience with these mikunis and have any helpful tips?

Yep, that is LOT of carb and not nearly enough baffling in the exhaust.

I love the sound of no baffling 4 to 1 but my bike just hated cold starts like that threw a muffler on and presto sombitch started up just barely touching the button lol

Sportsbob, that's waaaay too large a carb for your bike.

Brandon, you've discovered just one of the reasons no baffle isn't good. Some back pressure is a good thing

Plus better mileage, altitude compensation, tolerance for ham handedness on the throttle, etc. Properly tuned CV's are really the best solution on a street bike.

That is way too much carb for an unmodified 1100 street bike. You should be looking at 32's if you want a good match for your bike.

I have to disagree with this. A properly tuned open exhaust works just fine without a muffler on it. Of course, that is a rare thing in this world. If we are talking about an untuned open 4-1 header without the correct size and length primary and secondary pipes, then a muffler and a bit of back pressure will definitely improve that situation.

Thanks for all the good advice. I had just ran across someone that had a set of 40s for sale for pretty cheap and thought I'd look into it. I originally was looking into rs36 and ran across the 40s. I do feel that i should get a set of slide carbs since the air box is gone and I don't want to put one back. And the OE carbs are not in good shape. I have yet to decide what to do as far as exhaust. The stock carbs are 34mm I figured 36mm would not be a bad move.....thoughts on that?
