leaking gas
So I went out riding yesterday, came home, parked the bike and came out this morning to about 2 gallons of gas on the floor under the bike. After looking at it for a while, I got that the gas was leaking off the left side carb between the airbox (i think) and the actural carb. It's a 1980 gs 1000. Any help or anything telling me what happened ed would help alot. ThanksTags: None

i can only think of 3 reasons. Bad float height, stuck needle valve, bad petcock.
Check float heights and needle valve if ok then remove the tank and see if its leaking out the fuel line since there is no vacume than there should be no fuel other than whats in the line.

You have two problems. One is a petcock problem and the other is a carburetor float problem.
Petcock problem could be one of two things. Either you left the petcock in the prime position or it's shot and needs to be replaced. That's assuming that you have the stock vacuum operated petcock in place.
The float problem is just that. You have a leaking float valve that needs to be fixed. It could be just need a simple rap on the side but more then likely it will need the float valve and seat cleaned or replaced.
Make sure you dump the oil in the engine and replace the oil filter. More then likely gas has filled your engine. Do not start the engine if the oil level is high and you smell gas when you open the oil filler cap.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Was parked on kickstand, and I usually leave the red lever to on, which I'm guessing is the petcock. I call it the fuel shutoff switch. So that should be the same thing I'm guessing. I think it's just gonna go to the shop tomorrow...

Red lever??? More then likely someone installed an inline fuel valve. Can you post a pic of your fuel shutoff switch?
Still means you have a leaking float valve on one of your carbs.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Glad to know that I am not the only one having this same problem. I have fuel coming out of the carbs and not the overflow. I had them apart this weekend to clean and found there were 2 different sized jets(three 113's and one 112.5) I replaced those with 115's. I checked the needles when they were apart and all were clean and free. My question is why would the fuel be coming out of the needle jet(at least that is where it looks like it is coming up from) and not the overflow? I am hoping it is the fuel valve that has gone bad. Anyone have any info feel free to chime in.

What 'exactly' are they going to do for $600??? rebuild carbs? buy you a new petcock?? You can buy a new petcock for $100 shipped. If your carbs weren't leaking before this then they likely shouldn't need a rebuild. I'm very curious what the shop has quoted you. If I were you I'd do the work yourself, time after time bike shops rip people off.Rob

The only problem I have is all I have tool wise is wrenchs, and this is my first bike so I have no idea what I'm doing with it. Is there a walkthrough? And i may just need to clean the carbs and not full rebuild. And we're do I buy a petcock? Also how do I get all the gas out of the oil, because I heard that any gas in the crank case with vapor lock the engine. And there is a possibility of gas getting in the oil.

aww crap... I got pulled into this thread before I realized who you are. You have posted another thread where multiple people have asked for a picture of your 1980 1000S and you have not posted one yet. When I read your other thread I posted that it sounded bogus, and that still stands. I don't mind helping you out at all but I don't want to help someone out that is just trolling.Rob

I promise I'm not out trolling. The multiple pictures of the bike on my phone are too big to upload I guess. I have to find a way to make the pictures smaller. But to prove to you that I am not bluffing, I will pm you
