You may only need a petcock, not a carb rebuild. You can buy a new petcock from these guys.

    item #1 and it's only $76.89!!!!! not $600.................freaking shops.

Well ****. Found out my new battery is backwards from the old one. Connections were backwards. Have light and crank now. And the wd40 now has the handlebars unlocked

In severe need of new ignition on 1980 GS1000s

Located in east washington, don't have much. Needs to have a key with it. Also handle bars are stuck in lock mode. Any advice would be nice too

Yup, that's it right there. Was trying that earlier. So just twist the bars or move the bike too? And can you point me towards an after market ignition and how to set one up?

Okay so my grandfather got it unlocked while I was sleeping. Big surprise to me and now when I have the key to the on position, I have no lights on the dash.... and yes I did get the bike for $800...

Well lo and behold, he doesn't seem to be a troll after all. You have some good advice from the previous poster....read the manual.

Thank you! And got some of it figured out. The petcock was bipassed for a fuel shutoff valve. Weather it was broke or something. But the petcock is there, it just has a hose coming off into the valve. Previous owner stuff I wish I knew more about

I would have to guess the stock petcock started to fail and was leaking fuel when it wasn't supposed to. The PO put a shut off valve in to deal with the situation instead of replacing the stock petcock. Problem is fixed with a new petcock. Your bike appears to be a 1980 GS1000L. You can verify this by looking at the imprinted numbers on the steering stem. You can figure out what a steering stem is by reading the manual.

Okay thank you very much. Do you recommend that I keep the shutoff valve or should I get rid of it.

Get rid of it. Now when I say you have a 1980 GS1000L, I am going by your pictures. You could very easily have some parts on your bike that are from different models. Check your frame numbers, your engine numbers and measure the the distance between your petcock bolts before you order a new petcock.

Yes, the 'G' signifies you have the shaft model not the chain model.
