Carbs assembled! But I have an extra part...

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped me out on this journey and a huge thank you to the contributors of the tutorials made my life easy!

Also if you are new and just want to ride don't be the bone head I was and try and not do a full teardown of the carbs at first...

But onto the problems, I tore down the carbs a couple months back and then held off on the rebuild for a while. I took a good amount of pictures of everything then in the time being my SD card crashed and I lost them all, so assembly was by memory and every source I could find and I do believe I have them correct, but I have a plate that I cannot find in any manual or tutorial whatsoever. If someone could point me towards one that covers it i would greatly appreciate it.

Now to tune them and go over the valves and all that fun stuff.

    Random plate:

That part doesn't look familiar to me but here's a better view of the first picture so people can see it straight from here

That plate goes between 1 and two on the back..it holds the clutch cable back from the linkages. only fits one way obvious. If I recall the two holes go up on the top cover. Uses one back hole from carb 1 and a hole from carb two.

No idea what that is, I don't think it from your carbs though

I recently bought a set of '81 GS650 carbs that had the same plate on it. I didn't take any pictures of them together but if I remember correctly, it was right in the middle of the carbs, on the air filter side, with the 2 holed section attached to the bottom. I had never seen one of these before, like you, so I don't know what it's purpose is. Maybe someone else will chime in. Sorry, but that's the best I can do for you. I believe one of the bottom holes attached to one carb bottom and the other hole attaches to a different carb bottom. If that makes any sense.

Close...see my post above...goes on the rear between the carbs and head.

EDIT:::: Just went to the fiche and the 81 1000GL does not show the plate..but where i said it goes is where it should be. Seen it there on other racks before, so now I think now you dont have the original carbs off the bike.

Do as Chuck said. It goes on the engine side between carbs 1 and 2. The wide part goes between the bottom bar bolts between carbs 1 &2 while the top goes to one of the CV slide cap screws on carb 1. Just like this:

Failing to install this piece can lead to a stuck throttle linkage and could end in a VERY bad day.

If you choose to ignore this part (or one of its alternatives) you should be VERY aware of the location and operation of your "kill" switch.

                  Not be piling on here..
But when ever I disassemble anything - I take many pictures of it BEFORE I take it apart.
I have used those pics to help me get things back together a few times...
Digital pics are cheap - I use my tablet for better viewing (larger) - and delete if I want to when finished...

Couple times I've wondered that myself. Anyway I can check on that ? Will it cause any problems?

And I will be reinstalling it, I just could not figure out where it went being the holes weren't lining up 100%

Thank you all for your replies!

As I said in my original post. I took plenty of pictures but then had an sd card failure. Lost them all.

Chuck is right, although I would call that the front and not the back. Mine is on the "engine side" between 1 and 2 between the carbs and head...that is where my cable is routed

There is a (slight) chance that not installing it will not cause a problem.

However, when that "problem" shows up, things get exciting ... QUICKLY.

My son can tell you just how exciting it can be. He had a lady friend on the back seat, gave the throttle a twist and 'got on down the road'. Shifting from 2 to 3 did not seem to drop the revs and the bike kept gaining speed. Luckily, he knew how to use the "kill" switch and stopped the engine. Unfortunately, it was on a narrow 2-lane road with no shoulders and about 50 uphill yards from an intersection. By the time I got there with a trailer to rescue them, they had pushed the bike around the corner to a wide spot. It did not take long at home to find the problem. That 'left-over' plate keeps the clutch cable out of the throttle linkage.

                            .
