I have a set of each and can corroborate Chef that there is effectively no differences performance wise. The main difference is price. I got the APE's for $60 from Pingel and the K&N's ran me $150. Pretty easy decision that. The only real downside to the APE's (if you'd call it as such) is that the boot on the K&N effectively traps the clamp whereas the APE you have to be mindful of where the clamp is as you tighten it or the filter will walk itself off. If you click the 850 link in my sig and scroll down you will see a side by side comparo of the filters. As an amendment to the color situation in that post the filter material looks identical after cleaning and re-oiling them to the K&N filters. I've got about 1500 miles on them and absolutely zero complaints.
