    Idling issues

Bike is running well since being brought back to life, but I noticed today that I had to keep some throttle on at stoplights or idle would get too low and shut down. I noticed some slight black smoke from left pipe, so checked plugs when I got home. Cylinder 1 wasn't firing quite right, so I trimmed 1/4" of plug wire and screwed cap back on (I had been diagnosing charging issues lately, so not a big surprise to need this). Bike running better now, slightly higher idle on side stand than center, and much lower in gear. I adjusted idle screw between the carbs, and noticed improvement, but now kinda high in neutral, still low in gear after 15 seconds or so.

Since my tach doesn't work, I used timing light to check rpm. Cyls 1&2 show 2.1k in neutral now, and 1500 in gear (bike lugs and stalls here). What has me really confused is middle Cyls show 4k rpm?

Before anyone asks, carbs completely rebuilt, and correctly to GSR standards. They have also been synced, valves adjusted, new plugs /wires/caps, new petcock, coil mod has been done, SPG, and new Dyna ignition. Bike runs great, just poor idle after sitting still in gear more than 5-10 seconds.

What happens if you put it in neutral? Do the RPMs go up? If so, you may need to adjust your clutch.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Two more questions. First, what year model bike is it? Second, have you checked the compression?
