Just so there's no confusion... To raise the needles you need to first remove the stock white plastic spacer and then replace it with the metal washers. The washers are on top of the needle e-clip. If you add more washers and keep the plastic spacer in place you'll actually be lowering the needle. You can use 3 washers and that will get your needle a few mm higher. You can buy a washer assortment at any Radio Shack. It comes with a bunch of other washers but does contain the ones you'll need and they're fairly cheap. It will be obvious which ones you need to use. Should be enough there to do two carb sets.

That will do it. What are you using for the intake? Stock airbox? Good quality pods? Emgo Sand Sifters?

Edit: Just found it, APE pods. Did you change the jetting as required for these pods? Did you tune the mixture screws afterwards?

First let me say THANKS for every ones input. The pictures are great too. I need to figure this out before I burn a piston. I have been fooling around with fuel level, setting to within specs but its getting hard with my 46 yr old eyes.. I think I have adjusted them just a bit low. From what you have told me low fuel level will make the bike run lean. I just bought 4 of the brass nipples to check fuel height with carbs on bike but I am not exactly sure if I'm supposed to have the bike running when I check the height or just sitting upright level

Factory service manual says to check float height with the engine running. I've done it both ways. I usually bench test them first just to make sure the floats aren't leaking and then check them again with the engine running. The vibration from the engine running helps the float valves seat a little faster.

Hey tkent, I've got 130 mains in now, stock were 117s. The mods on the bike are ape pods 4into1 exhaust suppertrapp silencer(humm..potental problem) and I just put in the 816 piston kit this spring. I have the mixture screws at 3 turns out seems to be best right now.

What other size main jets have you tried?
                    Which jet needle?
What else aren't you telling us?

How about doing a plug chop at the point where it feels a little "lean" and verify what's really happening. If it is lean, then try raising the needle as described above.

Ok, Ive got the bike on stands nice and level, tanks still on so I can run the bike. I've got 4 nipples so I'm going to do them all at once and take a picture. the manual says run the bike at idle and the level should be at 5mm below the line of where the two pieces meet. correct???

Whatever the manual states as the proper fuel level.
