Question about installing stock exhaust

on my 79 GS 1000.

Are there any special tricks or tips anyone could share with me on this? Do I need to remove anything like the side stand or something else? I have the right side installed just loosely but the left side seems to be more problematic.

This stock exhaust was acquired late last year and I am just now trying to put it on. Didn't know if it has to be connected with the cross over pipe 1st and installed whole or whether it could be done like I am trying, one side at a time.

I would think that you would want crossover loosely connected and attempt to have a go at fitting all 4. Maybe using floor jack to hold/ coerce the system up. Is the kickstand interfering? Don't forget to use new exhaust gaskets!

OK, so I have the system in place with the flanges loosely fitted. Before I take each of the 8 bolts back out and coat them with anti sieze, I am asking if they are supposed to be torqued to a specific setting?

On my 650, torque is about 10 ft-lbs,but check your service manual or wait for someone else to respond. On my bike, in the flanges/collars the two holes are not 180 degrees apart, so make sure you get the right orientation before you install bolts and tighten.

Mine seem to be 180 degrees apart, so lucky there as it didn't require any thinking on my part.

It is unclear in your service manual, but the numbers are there on page 7-4 here:

i believe you can interpret it to the the same as what Tom203 said. 6.5 - 10 ft-lbs.
