Missing Air Jets- 4-1 Pipes
Can anyone think of a scenario where you would remove the air jets (the jets facing the airbox)? I'm puzzled if the PO just forgot to put them back in, or if it might have been a necessary step in re-jetting for the 4-1 exhaust he installed @#$%% ?? Bike runs great, lots of "PULL", and I'm of the mindset...if it ain't broke (or sounds like it's about to break), don't fix it. Just curious !! PS: It's an '80-GS850- stock everything else (i.e. airbox)

Can't imagine why they are not there. There needs to be a certain amount of METERED air that is mixed with the pilot jet to provide the mixture. With no air metering, I would check the size of the pilot jets and the setting for the pilot (mixture) screw to see if they have been "adjusted" to compensate.

OK. I'll check the pilot jet size.
So the affect of getting unmetered air (unrestricted or too much air ?) would produce a lean or starving engine ? In other words, more air than fuel in the mixture ? Or, perhaps just the opposite...more air means it's sucking up more fuel for a richer combustion ?? Thanks

Too much air intake makes a leaner mixture feeding the carbs. CV carbs mix the fuel and air down below in the bowls and its fed to the carbs and the amount is them metered by the pilot screws at the top back of the carb throats.

In my case, I'm inclined to beleive the PO intentionally left the air jets out (all 4). If one was missing, I could see it being an oversight, but all 4 are out.
Bike fires right up. Really great throttle response. From my limited frame of reference/comparison, it seems to be working fine- dunno . Perhaps PO modified the pilot jet size to compensate, like Steve suggested- I'll check on that.
