broken studs at head
What is the best way to extract broken studs from head at exhaust flanges? Thanks.Tags: None

DO NOT THINK about EZ Outs!!! Take a picture..got anything hanging out past the face of the hole??? If so, I weld a nut to the remaining stud and let it cool to harden the weld. Lots of penetrating oil and use a socket to carefully see if it will start turning out. if it budges a little, its more oil and work it in and out to loosen the corrosion and draw the oil in deeper. Be patient and work it back and forth.
Slip a bigger nut over the stud and weld from the stud center out to the nut.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

If little or nothing is protruding, get some left hand drill bits and drill a small pilot hole in the center as deep as you can, then progressively larger until the bolt come out. Don't go too deep, measure another hole for depth and mark your drill bit1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Stop about 5 MM SHORT of the actual depth of the holes as the bolts also stop short. drill too deep or with a lot of pressure and you can easily drill into the head at the bottom of the hole and thats not good. Drill easy and "feel" for the drill bit to break thru and stop!!!MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I used a tiny pipe wrench on one, welded a blob to another stud and the pipe wrenched it, and drilled out the last of the 3 stuck studs. I couldnt get a nut to successfully weld to the studs. Definitely work ot back and forth gently and soak it like crazy with penetrant.
Which one[s] of the studs are stuck? Are they the in the middle by the frame rails or are they the ones closer to the outside of the motor. I had an easier time messing with the ones that were more outboard.Last edited by turbojonn; 12-06-2015, 03:43 AM.1981 GS 1100e turbo, 83 motor, turbo pistons, new head, new turbo, backed and welded clutch basket, Dyna S ignition, cbr 929 front end, gsxr 750 rear end with 190 tire, all carbon fiber covered bodywork.
