    Oring grease

    Hi all,

    Rebuilding carbs on 79 gs425 and wondering what kind of grease to lube new orings with? Silicone? Brands are helpful, but I live on an island and only have a NAPA auto parts store here.

    light coat of Vaseline.

      I've always used 3 in 1 silicone spray lubricant. This stuff I think (without being able to look):



      not sure why it's unavailable, sure I got some at WallyWorld.
      It's smoke that make electronic components work.
      Every time I've let the smoke out by mistake, they never work again.

        When you go into Napa, there should be a stand up display on the counter with 1" x 2" packets of various chemicals. Get the Brake Lube, it's a silicone grease perfect for this appliaction

          I have wheel bearing grease closest to me on the bench & that has never failed me or leaked. Don't try to trick yourself. Simple is good.

              I have a tub of some good ole cherry love wheel bearing grease that I bought 12 years ago and it has yet to cause me an issue. just don't use too much. dip a couple fingers in to get small coat, rub the ring between your fingers and stick it in. this way lubes the ring without overdoing it.

                Vaseline is what I've used for years. Also use it to lube the carb holders prior to installing carbs. Any silicon based lube works and is inert. Just don't try to install dry.

                  I have heard some express concern about using silicone lubes in the fuel system because they won't dissolve in fuel and a clump may block a passage. Apparently ,several here have not had a problem with that. Still, if I have a tub of petroleum-based axle grease available (and I do) that's what I'll grab.

                    A tiny amount of oit rubbed onto a tiny oring isn't enough to block anything. Globs of grease maybe but really it's just a thin film.

                      We are talking about thin coating on the o-ring with grease not globbing it into the fuel passages.

                            Whatever you have available, don't over complicate it,

                            Thin light oil is all you need,

                            Your using new O-rings, not re-using old brittle ones
