So it's been several years since that I've owned my 79 GS750L and one issue I've had with it is the mufflers on the exhaust were screwed up. The previous owner wanted a Harley sound for his bike so he tore out the baffles (he did eventually traded the bike for an actual Harley). Anyway I could never expect to afford the immense cost of a new exhaust system (I'll call it ES from now on) until now. My financial future shows a hint of being able to afford doing the work to the bike so I'm seriously looking into now. I expect to buy the system and having somebody else install it for me (I have a habit of stripping screws and such). Even though my model is an 'L' model, I'm sure anything that applies to the 'N' and 'E' models would work too (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Here are my preferences: straight muffler, removable baffles, 4-2 ES and an overall quiet system (might be able to put a silencing baffle in if needed).
So here are the options that I have found so far:
1) Remove the muffler and replace with aftermarket muffler that matches what I want. Not even sure if possible to separate the muffler from the header pipes without cutting/welding.
2) Replace the ES with an okay condition OEM ES from a scrapped bike. I've found a few on eBay recently. This is the cheapest, looks closest to the original, but not the prettiest and likely no ability to remove the baffle or replace the muffler.
3) Buy a Mac 4-2 ES. It has a turnout exhaust, which I hate the look. I'd prefer a straight pipe with a removable baffle, but that is only available on the Mac ES for the 1980+ GS. This one is also about $450 (can be found elsewhere for cheaper), and I've seen opinions that they are cheap and loud, both makes it sound like a bad choice.
4) Find out if Mac would put the muffler from their ES for the 80 models onto the ES for the 79 model. No idea what this would cost, but I'm betting a lot. The exhaust looks nice, but probably has the same issues as the other model mentioned.
5) Buy a Vance and Hines ES. The only ones I've actually seen are 4-1, which I hate the lack of symmetry. Pretty expensive at almost $500. It looks nice otherwise.
So does anybody have any suggestions, experience with replacing their ES, or anything that could help me figure this out? If there are any other ES models out there that I could check out that would help a lot too.
