    Exhaust pipe gasket?

    Hi all,

    working on 79 gs425 and have everything in spec (finally). Plugs swapped and both cylinders now firing. However I'm getting a lot of exhaust coming from the right side header exhaust pipe connection and did not see any gasket when I took exhaust off. I have the clamp and two semi circle metal pieces (to seat the pipe?) but am wondering if there's supposed to be gaskets involved? I saw them on the schematic on bike bandit and might order some, but I thought I'd check in here first.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Yes, there's a circular copper/composite or alloy/composite gasket goes in there. It gets well squashed in use but is often re-useable a couple of times, just don't bank on it.
    A tube of firegum (automotive or stove grade) is your friend, too.

      After the gaskets have been in-use for a while, they just look like part of the head. When you take your header pipes off, look in the exhaust port to see if there is a step in the corner where the pipe would seat. If there is, that "step" is the gasket. Pry it out with a screwdriver, install a new gasket. If there isn't a step, you have no gasket at all, so just install a new gasket.

          Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm having issues with this. On my '79 GS750, those little gaskets/exhaust connectors (according to the parts diagram, I'm referring to (14771-44010)) are giving me trouble. I'm referring to the stock exhaust; how does one install those? The old ones I have slide right on and off; the new ones appear to be made of some sort of very compressed steel wool and the inner diameter is too tight to go around the pipe. Any suggestions?

            They sit between the pipe and the flange inside the exhaust ports after removing the old ones.

              Right, but the inner diameter of the connector is smaller than the outer diameter of the exhaust port it slides over. The old ones are already removed.

                14771-44010 goes between the header pipe and the muffler. See the "muffler" diagram on your favorite parts site.

                Crap I didn't buy new ones and I have no idea if the old ones are still there.
