    Carb compatibility '79 Mikuni on a '81 GS850G

Hello gurus - I'm rebuilding my first carb ever on my first bike ('81 GS850G) and found that there were 2 failed attempts to extract an airscrew on carb #2. You can see the damage from the photo that 2 torx screws have been broken off inside... A machine shop said it was impossible to remove due to the material of the torx screws.

My only hope if to purchase another #2 carb and the only thing I found online was from a 79 GS850. Here: http://m.ebay.com/itm/79-Suzuki-GS85...583?nav=SEARCH

Will this fit on my bike? Desperate to get it back up and running...

Nope, a 79 carb is a very different animal from an 81. The 79 is likely a VM while the 81 is a BS. I may have a cleaned up #2 carb that should work for you. I'll go through it and verify all is good. I'll include a pilot screw assembly as well since it looks like you're going to need that. Just PM me and we can talk.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

the carb in the link is definitely a vm. won't work. JT's carb will work though.

If you could get the correct manifolds you COULD make the VMs work on a motor that came with CVs. The 850 is basically the same motor from 79-83 anyway. The intake diameter is likely larger onthe post '79 motors but other than that they are virtually the same.

The one in the ebay listing was just a single VM carb. Not a bank of carbs. There's no reason to even think of going to change out all carbs to VMs. Plus, you'd have to replace the throttle and choke assembly along with the carbs.

16 mins and questions answered with a complete solution. Gotta love this site. You may be able to buy more parts for the Kawasaki's but good luck beating that type of support. Good on ya.

When it comes to the bs carbs, i find i have to look at the suzukis on partzilla, even on my kz for the majority of the parts, especially throttle shaft seals

This site is pure magic. Thank you so much! I'll definitely PM you.

On another note, I just got a quote from an extraction specialist who said he could do it. He mentioned he had a machine that could disintegrate nearly any metal and for me to bring the air screw replacement for him to retap and restore the threads. Is it worth it or should I go for a complete replacement? I'd like to avoid introducing any more potential issues.

                check him out: http://www.extractit.com/

Save your money and just put in a new carb body, that would be the easiest and safest route. What was the quote to extract??

Just got off the phone with him. $65 bucks and he said one of the torx screws were against the wall. no guarantees...

JTGS850GL: I just PMd you about the carb. I think purchasing one would be the best bet.

                    Thank you all!
