    82 GS850GLZ jets

My 82 runs very lean. it won't run well unless the air filter is dripping oil. I would like to try some plug chops and expect to increase fuel flow in main jet and needle jet ranges, so I don't have to have some much oil in my air filter that its dripping on the pipes.

How do I identify What is the next size jet and where do I buy them from? i would like to buy a selection.

I believe my needle jet is x-5 and my main jet is 115

    thank you

What modifications have you made to intake and exhaust?
    Stock airbox or pods?
    Stock exhaust or a header?
If a header, how restrictive (loud) is the muffler?

You have stock jet sizes which will work beautifully on a stock bike.

all items stock. no changes. BUT. it runs lean. even 3.5 turns out. and it always has. I want to experiment with larger jets and plug chops to get it set a bit richer. where do i find the jets that i may want? I expect to just go slightly larger. I looked on jets r us but i couldnt identify the correct jets.

If everything is stock, jets are not your problem. Have you cleaned the carbs? I don't mean just spritzing around some carb cleaner spray, I mean CLEAN them, as in ... strip them down to little itty bitty bits, soaking them for 24 hours in carb cleaner dip, then re-assembling them with new o-rings from cycleorings.com.

When all that is done, three turns out on the mixture screws will get you going, then when the bike warms up, slowly turn them in for best idle. Might end up in the 2 to 2.5 turn range, might be a little more, each bike (carb) is different.

It is possible that the tips of the mixture screws are broken off, so no matter how much you turn the screws out, you are not changing anything. Pull the mixture screws, inspect the tips. Check the condition of the o-ring on the mixture screw. I think you will be convinced to get new o-rings.

Also be sure to inspect the o-rings on the intake tubes. They go flat, losing their seal over time. Cycleorings.com has them all for you, including new stainless bolts to hold the intake tubes to the head. Less than $25 for everything.

Yes, go through the carbs properly. A rebuild tutorial is linked in my signature. Also check the airbox and replace the foam if it's deteriorated. Weatherstrip foam works well for that part.

Shimming the needles will help richen up the mixture a little if the rebuild doesn't get it done. I'd do that afterwards, not first though.

I cant blame you for making assumptions here but believe me I have rebuilt 30 carbs from a complete tear down. those carbs are perfect. the valve gaps are dead on and everything is right. but that air filter has to be very wet for that bike to be grooved in. i will get my plug chops done and try the next size up on jets and see if i can operate with an air filter thats not dripping on my pipes.

i also have an 81 gs850g and that one is perfect all stock. not as sensitive to the amount of oil in the filter....but it still needs to be kept oiled. just not running wet. the airboxes are both well sealed.
