Well this is an interesting approach to broken float tower

I just love these old bikes. You never know what you're going to find that a PO did. This is an interesting approach to fixing broken float pivot towers on BS32. Look at the carb on the right:

IS the job the home machinist did off? Or is it the needle valve or seat?

One might suspect the volume of fuel in the carb bowl would be thrown off a few mls as well.

Using two bolts to replace the broken towers is really kind of a good idea. If I can get the hinge pin out I'm just going to clean up the sides a little, where the float pivots, and set the float height. As long as the float swings freely and I can set the height I don't see a real problem. The float is just hanging up on the rough surface of the threads. About 1 minute with a die grinder and I'll have them smooth. Personally I've had good luck using JB Weld (not quick) to glue those back in place. Who ever did the work before didn't get the rack assembled correctly and the throttles were hanging up on something. As soon as I started to disassemble them they snapped closed. In any event they are not really all that dirty inside. I'm sure some of the small passages are plugged but overall they are pretty clean.

I had a tower break off right in the middle. So I drilled a hole in the post base and a hole in the broken surface of the broken off tower part.
Then I inserted a roll pin and tapped the post back on.
Came out pretty straight for hand drilling it. If one was to use a drill press I imagine the results could be excellent using a good drill press bed vise.
I think you are right, file those threads smooth and call it a day. Should be fine.

I got the pin out pretty easily. Turns out it is a finish nail. Even if I need to put a small washer in to take up excessive end play I think it will be fine.

I have a JB Welded one going on 3 years now, no problem. Might be a problem next time I take the carbs apart but I have a spare set.

Further finding. One of the "towers" is loose. So I'll be putting some JB weld on both just to make sure. Also noticed that when he drilled the hole for the tower on the left, he went all the way through to the air intake!... I'll be using JB weld on that hole once I get it cleaned out. He put RTV over the hole.... Gotta love these old bikes....SMH... LOL

So while I disassemble the carb rack I'll order some O-Rings from Mr. robertbarr's carb O-rings
I've used them before and was really pleased.

If you end up wanting to fix it correctly then just give me a PM. I have a number of BS32 carb bodies laying around that are cleaned and ready to use. I can part with one relatively cheep.

I can vouch for JTGS850GL, I got a carb body from him a couple years ago after I broke my second post (slow learner).

Necessity truly is the mother of invention. When that repair was done, perhaps new carb bodies cost an arm and leg and there was no ready supply of cheap used ones like now.

They sure are available now. Personally I can see using a carb body in that shape today.

I've had a JB welded one fail... Just so you know it's possible! I've done a "pin up the middle" with a split pin across fix on one of these before too. That's still going (in my friends bike) 7 years later...
