    Good kit ?

    I'm in the market for carb kits. Did forum search and see KN kits are not recommended by most. Are the Z1 kits worth buying? ($23) I see that individual OEM parts are available, but at $32 for a needle valve and $4 for an O-ring..something like $400 for parts is just whacked. What are alternatives?

      Most aftermarket carb kits are made in China and the quality is junk. Do not use them. There is no reason to.

      Go through the carb tutorial. Buy a set of O-rings from Robert Barr. Following the tutorial, dismantle them, clean them per the tutorial, and reassemble using the jets already in there.

      I have done over two dozen sets of carbs this way. Between every GSer on this site who has done their carbs, I would guess a couple thousand have been rebuilt this way.

      All it will cost you is the $14 or so for the o-ring kit, and $20 for the Berrymans/Gunk/Gumout carb dip.

        I have been thinking lately about what is the best way to remove the seats for needle valves. Sometimes they will not budge.
        THey are easy to deform. Sorry for the jack but I wonder if a special tool exists. I can envision one but have no means to make one.

          What I do if one is really stuck in there is to turn the carb upside down on a bench, and squirt penetrating oil (Kroil, Liquid Wrench, or whatever of that ilk turns you on) on the outer lip so it can sink down and get around the o-ring. Over the next day or two, replenish the oil if none is visible on the lip.

          Within a day or two, the most stubborn seat will easily come out simply by grasping it with needle-nosed pliers and pulling.

              smart choice. It is amazing how many refuse to see reason on this topic. Follow the rebuild guides, do not cut corners.

                On my last rebuild the seats wouldn't come out and I wound up damaging two of them by grabbing them with needlenose pliers. I'll try the penetrating oil next time and see if that doesn't help loosen up the seat first. I used heat but no love. It was quite frustrating.
