    1981 Suzuki GS650E Exhaust replacement?

I have a 1981 suzuki gs650E I am "ressurecting" with plans to restore it more this winter. It came with the left stock exhaust patched with an exhaust repair kit due to a 6 inch section missing under the engine. I found a stock exhaust on ebay for $205 with shipping and looks quite a bit better than my current system. I have also been told MAC exhausts are the affordable brand new alternative. Currently can get a MAC exhaust megaphone 4 to 1 for $305 with free shipping.

Is there really a benefit to a 4 to 1 exhaust with an otherwise stock GS650E?

Macs are cheap from what I have read, but the 650's don't have many choices. You probably wouldn't get any performance increase compared to a decent stock setup with its crossover pipe if you are sticking with stock airbox.
my original exhaust is holding up well, so there should be other decent used ones to be had.

Would $205 (including about 45 for shipping) be reasonable for a GS650E stock exhaust that has rust along middle sections, but top and manifolds look pristine. It appears solid, but am not there to give it a tap near the rust area so am hesitant to snatch it up. It's annoying how similar this exhaust is to the shaft models, but i understand why they won't fit.

If it's the unit in Wisconsin.... Appears ok, but seller should post a pic of suzuki stamp on muffler: I'd be concerned about the tampered baffle. If you don't need it this year, I'd pass on it now and see what ebay offers over the winter.

I don't understand why a system from a G or GL wont fit on an E model.
I saw this system on ebay, free shipping too. GS 650 GL OEM Exhaust System & Header Pipe

The GL mounts are a little different and require some jigging to sit right on a G frame, as I found out from one set I picked up to try on mine.

There is this one from an established EBay seller, who has been a little high on his asking price for most items. It is hard to tell from the photos the shape of the silencers, but worth a look at the price. Might be the same one you have referenced above

Thanks for drawing attention to the baffle bolts and the lack of a stamp indicating a 650E specific part, which I have already caught a seller confusing these models on a front fork emblem cover in my favor (said it was a GL part but was a G/E emblem).
The seller raised the price of this exhaust after failing to sell it the previous month?! A week ago I asked for clearer pictures of full underside, NO RESPONSE. Then today I asked if they would adjust the price to the previous price and they actually responded saying they were all set with the current price. The item runs out tomorrow.

After looking at my stock exhaust, I am guessing you think someone drilled the baffle holes out? I can't see metal behind those holes, so it looks like that's what happened.

Has anyone had any luck with welding new pieces in on these old exhausts, or know where I could find smaller diameter exhaust patches? Mine is borderline non-repairable with deep rust and what looks like a few pin holes through that rust. It's broken off right at the crossover on the left side where it enters left muffler gasket. 20160723_205852.jpg

Btw, why are all my pictures upside down... even if i rotate and resave them....

Lose the crossover. The rest of it looks like it might work OK for a while.

you mean cut it out and patch over holes to complete a 2 to 4 exhaust?

Cut out that entire H shaped crossover section and replace it with two little sections of an appropriate sized pipe. Should be easy. Can you weld?

I had this problem when I switched to ipad mini....turns out that I had camera lens oriented wrong - pics were corrected for my viewing but were sent as taken, i.e. upside down

As to exhaust...that one looks poor even after the crossover

I am going to try having two straight sections of 1-3/8" pipe onto the middle headers, but have to pretty much destroy the gasket holding mufflers to headers to get old broken pieces out. Is this a common material I can get? It looks like heavy fabric.

I was unsuccessful finding the same material in bulk. I believe the gaskets can still be found OEM from the online suppliers, but they are pricey (~32/ea). The part number (at AlphaSport) is:

                            14771-47020-H17

Now my alternative was to find a heat resistant rubber or metallic tape to wrap around the inner pipe. This is a temporary fix while i search for an exhaust in better condition. Whole repair should be <$40 including having someone I know weld the two extensions on.
