    Carb boot question

I'm trying to figure out what's leaking air. Spraying carb cleaner around the boots, while it was hot and running, made the idle raise up. Either the sync screw, the o-ring, or the rubber to steel connection. These boots aren't cracked and are really pliable. I thought about using some neoprene washers on the sync screw if that would help. Does the thin coating on the base matter? It is peeling away from the steel on all four. I've got new o-rings to use.

I did have used but still soft and round o-rings in there. Maybe those were the culprit.

Try it with the new O-rings. If it still misbehaves I would suspect the boots themselves unless the clamps are really bad.

Boot looks fine, just needs an o-ring.

So what was causing his idle to raise when he sprayed carb cleaner on the boots?

My poor choice in reusing some orings must have let just enough air leak in, which the carb cleaner revealed.

Those O-rings are not reusable. Anytime you pull the boots off you have to replace them. I have seen boots that look good but have de-laminated from the metal part. Usually you can twist the rubber part and look for any gaps or if it spins they have de-laminated.

I grabbed the boots with o-rings from my 81 basket case hoping there were good. Not sure how long the PO had them on the bike before dismantling everything but it couldn't have been long since they were still well rounded and soft. Oh well, I'll order and wait. That's the hard part for me, waiting for delivery! The ones I pulled off were completely flat and rock hard, obviously not use able. The boots by the way don't twist or spin on the base at all.

I ordered a NOS gasket set for the 81 a while back and a lot, but not all, of the o-rings and paper gaskets fit the 83 as well. The only draw back is the age. The gaskets that I have used are fine but the rubber in the o-rings is a concern. Is it a good idea to just toss all of those and order new? I'm not such a tight wad that I can't spend an extra six bucks here and there, just trying to use what I have.

                      Thanks,
                      Roger
