BS34 carbs, but from what bike?

BS34 carbs, but from what bike?
Searching around the parts fishe and couldn't pinpoint what bike these carbs came from. Correct me if I'm wrong but that shield piece only came on the later year shaft drive bikes right? Those bikes came with a different type of choke actuation though. At any rate, open to suggestions...

My buddies 82 750L has that style choke attatchment.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

The shield thing is just an improvement above the spring wire thing that holds the clutch cable is my thought. They would work on most any bike with the choke knob coming up the center of the steering stem like the 750L I mentioned. His bike is chain drive too by the way but has that style choke linkage.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

They are the same as my GS 1000 G 19801984 GS1100GK newest addition to the heard

The choke linkage is typical of '80/'81. It was changed to a J-tube that pulled from between carbs 3 and 4 in '82.
I have seen the shield several times, but never noted a pattern as to which bike they were on.

Looks like an 80 or 81 GS1000. There's a faint black writing that has the assembly number imprinted on the side of the carbs near the top. If it's still visible the post the number. Should be something like 49160.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Of course, a previous owner might have changed something, too. I have '82-style choke linkage on my '80 850.

I've seen too many 1980 and 81 models that had that plate style guard to be coincidence. What's interesting is that the 1981 parts fiche for the 1000G doesn't show either the wire or the plate style cable guard while the 1000GL shows the wire style. Could just be another Suzuki parts fiche error.
I think it less likely that someone would have replaced the choke linkage from the newer style to the older style then replace the wire guard, that's known to break, with the metal plate that never fails. I know that I've converted several older choke styles to the newer lever style choke.

I just overhauled my carbs and could find absolutely no reason to keep that steel guard plate. I suppose it was for the clutch cable, if located between 1 and 2 carbs. I have my clutch cable outside for less internal friction.

I'm beginning to think that the 1000G's came with the metal plate while the GL's came with the metal wire. Could also be a parts use up thing while transitioning from one to the other.
Either way, if the carbs came from a G then it doesn't really matter since 80 and 81 were identical. Now if those came from an E then that's another matter. That why I would like to see if the assembly number is visible.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Those are 80 81 GS1000G carbs1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

I've got the carbs to the point where I'm putting them back together now. Bead blasted the outsides and replated all the hardware.
The float heights are really low. In the range of 18mm. The float needles and seat are OEM so I'm confused about the float height. I put a good bend on the float tang and now I've got the float height up to 20mm or so. I'm going to try them and measure fuel level the way they are. There is no reasonable way to get them up to 22.4mm like the book says. I've seen this before on different carbs but never have understood why.Ed
