    After meltdown pics

    First off thanks all for the help and words of encouragement. Torn down and going to get another can of dip and the rebuild process starts again in the next few days. 14769225412751923439299.jpg

    A good 24 hrs wont hurt them.in fact will for sure give enough time for the Berrymans to clean the small passages well. Bet when you reset them and fire the bike after some good soak time youll see a HUGE differeence.

      Good luck. Sometimes stepping back and taking a break is whats needed. Looks like a lot yellow in there which may be inside as well. Was it there after the first dip? If so they may not have been in long enough. I did mine in 99, then opened them up 2 years ago to do the o rings, and they were still spotless inside.

          Thats the way we all have learned on these old girls.......but its worth it when your cruising and shes running great.

                Leave them in 24 hours and all the plating will be gone off the steel parts. i don't recommend it.

                  As grey as they look in that picture and not all satin silver like new, I seriously doubt the dip is gonna strip much more off. In any case, we can agree to disagree Ed. Objective is to get the interior passage cleared and the carbs operating at an optimal level. If they were as varnishes as he explained on the phone to me, they are gonna need a considerable soaking to get them up to par.

                  So do you gamble on say 8 hrs and have to do them again for another 8...tallying up 16 hrs over two teardowns ..or do it once at 24 and be done with it so you can ride the dang thing?? Apples to Oranges.

                    Soak the carb parts for 24 hours with fresh carb dip and you are very likely going to darken the carbs too. The zinc takes on a dark cast which looks like crap.

                    it's always best to soak the carbs for the minimum amount of time necessary to clean the metal. Over night should be sufficient.

                      From what I understand is that they were heavily varnished when he took off the bowls. It does indeed take some time for the dip to eat its way thru the passages and dissolve the crud so it can be flushed out. Unfortunately we cant see inside the passages to gauge that time span.

                        The carbs were heavily varnished. If they don't look good after a long soak I just may paint them.
