    Inlet pipe boot separation

I discovered that the rubber is separating from the metal on the 3rd cylinder inlet pipe ('83 GS850G). Is this fixable or am I just better off getting a new one? The 2nd cylinder inlet pipe was bad also. My guess is that it is hotter in the middle which make them more prone to failure than the outer ones.

Surprised you are even asking. Get new parts. Part's Outlaw is one of the forum favorite sources.

Ed is 100% correct they should be replaced.

However - given the expensive time of year & that these are expensive parts you will find a short term fix of using Silicon caulk to seal up any air leaks will work. I wouldn't rely on it long term though as it will continue to separate. You need to degrease the rubber well to get it to stick....

Thanks. I figured new ones were needed but just thought I ask.

When that seperates, you need to seperate from some cash and get a new set.

          SOme related notes:
          - the two on left are differnt part number from the two one the right.
          - you will also want a new set of the orings, and bolts. Look up "Cycle ORings" for a set of orings and a new bolt kit.

I already had the o-rings. Just didn't expect to have to get new inlet pipes too...

Good that you know about the o-rings.
Some folks do not know they are o-rings. They just see the hard black part of the inletpipe-boot-flange, and figure it is part of the inletpipe-boot-flange.

My experience is that usually beat up the screws pretty well to get them out, and need a replacement set.
                I recommend these

a set of SS allen head bolts from Cycle ORings (a fine GSR member).

PS: Also great set of carb rebuild o-rings there too. Get those also if have only a fraction of a chance you need to get into the carbs.

Thanks so much Redman! Just going through this job myself. I have an 81 Gs650G, and she was idling very high after warming up. Idle screw wasn't correcting. Pulled the carbs and found all 4 intake boots torn. I just read through the Cycle Orings info and I am definitely ordering the viton o-rings and hex head bolts!

                  Cheers,
