High tenp PC

Has anybody used it on a exhaust pipes? Am looking at this stuff https://emeraldcoatings.com/product/...p-gloss-black/ but don't want it to flake off after a month.The more expensive alternative is this https://emeraldcoatings.com/product/...-1-quart-copy/ but have to wonder if it's just fancy expensive paint.Would really like my Supertrapp on the 85 750EF to look nice for longer than it has using VHT header paint.

I would be interested to see how that works. I have a black chrome exhaust that is not perfect. but I don't want to mess it up.

The two products I saw in the links were interesting. One was a powder that needed to be baked, the other promised high-temp, but was air cured.

The place that I took my header does a lot of powder coating, but offers ceramic coating for headers. Their ceramic coating goes on as a dry powder, but requires baking. It is available in black or silver, not sure how many shades of black. Check them out at Aesthetic Finishers.

I had some pipes "ceramic" coated too. It looks good but is fragile. I bumped the pipes a couple of times during install and chips occurred. Once in use a patch on one of the headers came off. Needless to say I'm less than impressed.

That sprayable high temp stuff has caught my attention. It reminds me of gunkote, but is air dry without baking. I wonder how durable it is? I've got a NOS Supertrapp header for my KZ that's painted black. I've considered trying to find someone to chrome it but a DYI repaint with some high tech coating would save a bunch of money.

I just went thru this (notes in "what did you wrench on today). I used Rustoleum 2000º paint. It seems that prep is critical (duh). On a bare, new, clean header tube, it held up well for 2 years. On the older tubes that were rusted, it flaked. Poor prep I assume. The good areas held up even with wirebrushing and sanding. I just re did it. We'll see how it holds up this time. It requires "curing" by running the engine in short time intervals.

Yeah I have questions about ceramic coatings that air dry to.Been doing PC for a bit and am aware it has to be baked.There are places in Vancouver that do ceramic coating but shipping a header to and from the Island to the mainland would be expensive.Shutter at doing it cross border.

My questions on the head Ed.At a guess it would like all other finishing a matter of proper prep work.Sounds to me like yours wasn't I am sad to say.I am kind of leaning to the PC.Like the idea of baked and done.

High temp powder is useless. It comes off as easily as spray paint. What you want is ceramic high temp paint. The stuff I use is cerakote. Super strong. There is air cure and oven cure. The air cure takes 5 days to fully cure. The oven cure is quick. I don't remember the time and temp offhand though. I've sprayed a few ATV exhausts and manifolds/headers. It holds up great. What kind of durability do you get with the air cure stuff on headers?

from what NIC Industries told me there is no difference between the air and oven end result. everything ive done is for customers and i dont know how well it has held up for them. the only one that i have sprayed for myself is the pipe on my daughters fourwheeler. it gets raced and hit with rocks and had held up surprisingly well considering the abuse. id guess for a motorcycle thats street driven it will hold up indefinitely. its not cheap and it smells really really bad so if you dont have ventilation spray it outside.

Just to clarify, you are using the word "paint" and on the Cerakote website they use the word "coating". Is it the same thing?

Yes thanks Dem for a real world perspective on both products.Saved me buying the high temp PC and doing all the work to have it fail.

It's a liquid you spray on with a HVLP gun. Call it whatever you want lol
