Question about my motorcycle
I just recently purchased an 83 suzuki gs 850 motorcycle and had to purchase a new carburator for this bike. I have since learned that the throttle cable was attached to the choke and with the new carburator, the bike will not run unless the choke is closed. Can someone tell me how in thw world the bike ran with the choke being used as a throttle? And could this be a timing issue?Tags: None

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

I think we'd all be a little dumfounded that the throttle linkage was connected to the choke, but there is no reason to run it that way, nor do I envision an easy way to run the cable such that it would open/close the choke reliably.
As for the new carb, if the choke cannot be opened, then there is a good chance the jetting of the new carb has been changed.
Post up some pics...'83 GS650G

The "choke" and the throttle cables do go to the carbs rather near each other, but there is no way that either cable will operate the other system.
Back to the original question: when you operate the "choke", it does open a separate air passage, so it will raise engine speed. Not nearly enough to get the bike down the road, but it does make the engine go faster.
