    GS650G came with pods and stock jetting

    Hi all, I just bought a non running GS650G that the previous owner told me he was running with pods and huge jets, and wanted better mileage. He put the stock jets back in, and then lost interest in the bike. The bike will start with some start fluid, and idle with a decent amount of choke, making me think that the enriched mixture from the choke gives it enough fuel to idle on. He gave me the stock airbox, and the fitting that fits from the carbs to the airbox, but I don't have the filter, or even know what the filter should look like. Is it a filter that sits on a little plastic frame? If so, I don't have the frame. He's going to send me the Jets that he was using. Would my best bet be to try to put the larger jets in to get it running, or to put stock components back on, and see what happens then?

    I'm inclined to revert it to stock, and see if I can play with the air/fuel to get an idle and get this thing ride-able. I've never dealt with pod filters before. Any suggestions are welcome!

    well, per seeing the airbox, go here and choose which model of 650 you have and have a look at the airbox apparatus..

      Stock airfilter box looks like this.... Has cover which seems to get misplaced by strippers.

          or, keep the pods and read this. Much else on the forum too if you search for "pods"? likely too much!! but you will likely get it going ...

            I'm definitely missing the airbox cover, and the filter. Does the filter go in on it's own, or does it attatch to any kind of plastic frame? On my other bikes, it's always had a little frame that clips in. Am I SOL without the frame/ airbox cover?

              There is "D" shaped boss on back of airfilter box:there is also a boss on cover itself to hold filter element in place . Two horizontal metal bars hold cover on. The suzuki element apparently comes with a plastic cage included.

                Is your goal to have the fastest, most powerful 650G around? Or are you happy with a very nice machine that is rather forgiving and easy to live with?

                Yes, it's possible to tune for pods and have a bike that runs really GREAT, but you will invest a fair amount of time and money to accomplish that. Gorminrider gave you a link to a thread that deals with tuning for pods. If it was a cheap and easy solution, virtually everybody would have done it by now. Some want it for the power, others just want it "because it looks cool".

                The stock airbox and filter does a wonderful job. Besides filtering the air, it also reduces the intake noise to keep the bike enjoyably quiet. It is not as susceptible to moisture or wind, making it easier to live with every day, and have predictable performance while doing so.

                It may cost a little bit to get all the stock airbox parts, but it will cost quite a bit more to get the proper jet kit, then factor in the time to tune it all.

                Your money, your choice.

                  I'm more than happy with a quiet, reliable machine. I got the bike for about $800, figured I'd get it purring, and put it up for sale to make some cash on the side. Stock seems to be the inexpensive and easier way to go. I can't really find anything online about selling the actual lid to the airbox, do you have any idea where I can source one?

                      You overpaid...like a lot... if this is going to be a flip, like a bunch. How much can you possibly make? Keep it and ride it!

                        Sold one exactly a year ago in my area for $1600, running and riding. I get this one running for 50-100, and then sell it for 1300-1600, I come out ahead, and do it again. I didn't plan on getting one that was this much of a project honestly, but it happened, and now I'm going to get it running. Worst comes to worst, I have an inexpensive commuter until I get what I have into it! The goal eventually is to flip one or two more inexpensive bikes, and be able to purchase a commuter that I want. I'd like a GS1100, or an old v65 sabre. I've got dreams, and this is the only way I can afford them on top of my drift car, DRZ, and nice car....
                        This GS happens to be in pretty decent shape, with very few miles, and all new rubber bits on it.

                        Read through that thread, seemed helpful, but I don't want to spend the time or money on getting the ods running right. When I get the jets, theres a chance I throw them in and see if it runs, but more likely I'll keep the stock jets in and get it running as stock.

                          probably should have saved the money for one of them then.. The 650's are not real popular.
                          In maine CL, you'll see lots of bigger gs suzukis and sabres ,waiting to be rescued . come fall ,bargains await for those who

                              Flipping 80's standards is something I've done before, and reliably made money. I'll get it purring, throw it on the side of a state highway with a for sale sign, and up on craigslist, and it should be gone within 2 weeks like the others were. I'll keep Maine in mind, it's far, but for the right deal I'd haul a trailer up!
