Exhaust clamp removal on #1 and #4 cylinders...

Hi all,

I had my entire exhaust system off this weekend so I could extract one of the bolts that I had twisted off. While I had it off, I finished polishing the underside. So now, now that the pipes and mufflers are really nice, the finned clamps that hold it to the head look terrible because they're rusty - and I'd like to just buy new ones. You can remove the clamp from the inside pipes, but I don't see any way that they can be removed from the outside pipes (#1 and #4). Does anyone know a way to do this?

That chrome seat trim is new (I was really surprised that you can still buy them!). They come with no color, even though the finished bikes came from the factory with colored inserts. So the color you see in those pictures is actually a tape stripe that I added. The color is not a perfect match, but it's pretty close to the light blue "accent" stripes on the painted items.

Sorry, can't answer your question but just wanted to comment on the appearance of the bike. She is a beauty indeed. Good luck with cleaning those finned connectors. I would probably just brush on some navel jelly and let it sit for a couple of hours and then use a scrubber brush plus small toothbrushes etc.

Actually that's a good idea. I know about Naval jelly, but it's been so long since I've used it that I didn't even think about it, so thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.

I had a pretty nice black and blue '80 850G. It was turn key and delivered with new tires for $600. There was some blistering over the blue stripes in a few spots, but a good stock seat. I gave it to my brother, and he shipped it to Arizona. He loved it until we found him a nice '80 1000G, which just needed some valve cover and tach drive oilo leaks fixed, valve adjustment and carb synch, and the usual electrical upgrades that I like to do. You can't go wrong with a decent 850G.

I haven't seen a nicer 900 Custom than the one that you have. Looks almost like one of Steve's bikes.

Would you mind sharing where you purchased your chrome seat trim strips? A couple of the mounting pins have broken off on both my strips, and I would also like to purchase new ones.

I like your idea of fitting a coloured tape stripe!

My exhaust clamps are also rusted and am unable to remove 1 & 4. The castings are very rough (like coarse sand was used) and one day I will try to grind/polish them smoother, and hopefully remove the rust in the process.

I bought them from Babbitt's Suzuki Parts Warehouse.com. Here are the part numbers:

Right hand: 45191-45100
Left hand: 45192-45100

They were $33.13 each side. Hope this helps!
