    ported head
.040 over bore with weisco pistons
    pods (oval)
4 into 2 short pipes just baffled
    went up 3 jet sizes
    clips one from the top?
idle air at 1 3/4 turns

followed carb recommendations from here for set up

so now she starts first kick
runs great up to about 2000 rpm
    pops and farts to 7000rpm
then goes like a bat outa hell and tries to rip your arms off

Try moving the needles the other way.
    Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

    Past:
    VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

Yep, put your clips one from the BOTTOM.

Might also try the air screws at about 1 1/2 turns.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Bigger main jet needed, 117.5 and try the clip at position 4.

        Read this.

If it goes well after 7K then I would say the main jet is fine.

Needle height adjustments should do it.

And of course, you have done a full strip of the carbs with new O rings and carb rubbers? Haven't you?

O so the clips were at second from the bottom so I moved them all the way down. Checked my plugs and looks like I'm running lean. Whitish tips and all. So next is a ride and see what happens. The screws on the bottom of the carb were taken out for the cleaning etc. Any recommendations as to where they should be? Thanks again

The screws on the bottom are the pilot jets. One full turn out should be fine.
