    8 valve GS750 / 1979 GS850 stock exhaust crossover

I'm wanting to put a stock exhaust back on my 1978 GS750. I have access to an exhaust off of a 1979 GS850 partsbike. The part numbers are slightly different but I've noticed that a lot of the aftermarket pipe manufacturers say their performance exhausts fit the 1977-1979 GS750 as well as the 1979 850. Has anyone done this before?

The aftermarket units fit both bikes, but the OEM could perhaps be dimpled for clearance in different areas or just a revised pipe. I think the 850 pipe may have a 2-3 exhaust H pipe crossover, that would also give you a different part number for an interchangeable exhaust.

Do you have a 79 850 pipe that you've found to buy?

The '79 850 pipe does NOT have the crossover.

I got some '79 850G pipes for my wife's bike. The baffles on her '82 850L are rattling a bit, and I want some longer pipes that don't exit right at the front of the saddlebags. They were not in the best shape, so I had them ceramic coated. Definitely NOT a cheap process, but it will fit the overall concept of the bike.

I have an 850 exhaust on my '78 750. The main difference is that on the 850 exhaust one of the down pipes on each side is permanently welded to the muffler. On the 750 each down pipe gets clamped to the muffler. There is no crossover. There were a few minor issues to finagle when I installed, but nothing terrible.
        Regards,
        Jason

Was there any cutting or welding involved?

          thanks

The issues I had mostly related to the side stand. The stand was hitting the exhaust enough to make a lot of noise when riding; I drilled and tapped a small hole and inserted a screw to make a 'stop' for how far back the stand could swing to solve that. Also had to shorten an excessively long bolt to prevent interference with the muffler/downpipe clamping ring on that side. My center stand is not permanently installed, so I can't say weather you will have trouble there. I don't have the stock locations for the rear exhaust hangers, but I believe those should line up well enough that you can make it work by elongating the mounting holes on the mufflers (if needed).

            Jason
