Slip-on mufflers?
My 83 GS850 has some pretty pitted pipes... I will patch what I can and paint it black until I can wrap it back to the mufflers. I have considered longer fishtail mufflers to bring the tips out past the bags, but this year the budges says I can extend mine back with a slip-on set up for when I can upgrade the mufflers. I will be welding pinholes closed in the crossover pipe.
What are the thoughts on this plan?Tags: None

Rather than weld the pinholes, just get rid of the crossover.

Not a bad idea, Steve. The only reason I hesitated was because of what (if any) changes it would cause, though I understand any bit would be minute. I might just do that. I want to extend my mufflers backward anyway, so it wouldn't make a difference.

"Any changes it might cause"??? The only change will be a very slight change in the exhaust sound. It is so slight, it would likely have to be pointed out, and then you still might not hear it.
As far as slip-on mufflers are concerned, some have had decent success with Harley take-offs. The Sportster model actually looks decent, too.

After I replied I went and read your full post...
I put Harley Take-offs on my shadow when I had it a few years ago and they looked great. Got the pair for 25 bucks! Wish I didn't send them off with the bike.... Can't find a deal like that now haha

I have a pair of Hardly Dyna slashcut stockers on my XJ, and aside from an intial setup, they run fine. I discovered the internal baffle plate is positioned differently on each one, to suit the cylinder characteristics of the V-twin, no doubt, but it led to a strange uneven note and a bit of vibeyness on mine.
Soon sorted out the spacing with rigorous crowbar technique and application of stainless pot scrubbers.
The result is a nice, free-flowing system that doesn't sound any louder than the stock pipes.
Oh, yes; and it cost me a quid for the mufflers and a quid for the scrubbers.

I need to do some pit repair on my header pipes though, #2 and#3 are a little spotty, and the "y" on each side has seen much better days. I just need to figure out whether they will be worth saving or if I need to get some fresh 45's to weld into place. Anyone have luck brazing?

Be aware that the pipe from the header flange to the "Y" is double-walled.
The chrome you see is only on the decorative outer pipe.

Oh, they are pretty sturdy 'covers', but the exhaust does not touch the inside of the chrome pipe directly.

Well, not sure which will show it better, so here is the end of the pipe that fits into the "Y", with and without flash:
This is on a set of '79 850 pipes that will be on my wife's bike in a few days.

If that propane torch is one of those bottle jobbies with a screw on head it won't get hot enough to braze with other than maybe for thin wall sheet metal using silver.Ed
