    1982 GS650G & GS650GL Exhaust - Compatible?

Anyone in GS-Land know whether the exhaust pipes from the 1982 GS650G and the GS650GL are compatible/interchangeable? The parts descriptions from Partizilla show slightly different stock numbers for the two.

10 GS points to whoever answers correctly!

    Cheers!

I don't know the exact answer but I do know that typically the L pipes are not a direct bolt on to the standard model GS bikes because of rear mount issues and maybe compatibility with the centerstand. Hopefully someone will have more specific info about the 650 and hopefully I'm wrong too. I tried some 550L pipes on my old 550E and while I was able to make them fit, it took slotting the rear hanger holes

Thanks for the input. Interestingly I too took some GS550L 82 pipes and put them seamlessly on to my GS550T so I am hoping for the same luck here!

The two sets of pipes LOOK different. The G pipes are longer and have a more mellow tone. The L pipes are shorter (by about 6") and have what I call a "motorboat" sound. Hard to describe, but it sounds like a boat's exhaust in the water.

And yes, there will likely be some mounting issues at the rear, but that can usually be fixed by slotting some existing holes or adding some flat stock to add a hole where there isn't any material.

I am about to do a similar thing to my wife's bike. I have some 850G pipes to go on her 850L, will be doing that in the next couple of weeks.
