Is it possible to replace the BS 34 with a different carb on a GS450?

Possibly a dumb question, however has anyone here tried/done this?

It would seem to be possible or am I missing something?

Some guys on KZRider put VM30's on their 400/440's so I don't know why you couldn't do the same with a GS450. If you give it a go please post up lots of photos so others can follow and learn.

There are several options, varying in cost of course. VM's in sizes varying from 30mm to 34mm work well and are probably the cheapest. Keihin CR specials are available but not cheap.I used Delloto PHF32's bored to 34mm for my racebike. Worked well.

where would someone go about for information on jetting a vm30-34 for the gs450? do you just kinda replicate the current jetting on the bike then adjust from there?

What is your objective for the swap?

Are you looking for a pretty much stock replacement or have you built up your 450 and are looking for performance?

Id say the objective is just to have newer, more tuneable carbs for a pod filter set-up. Better performance is good, but im also thinking compatibility/functionality. Pods, aftermarket exhaust, and desire to have a unique, cleanly built custom bike that runs great. CV BS34s are do-able but theyre not quite as qualified for this application as the VMs I guess is my mind set. A perfectionist is how I would describe my motives.

Also a big desire to learn and just try new and cool things

For performance I believe the VM's are the way to go, but for a simple solution that will give a minimal performance boost, you can simply use later model GS500 carbs which bolt straight on (although I'd recommend using the GS500 intake boots). I have 2001 carbs on my 82 450 with velocity stacks and foam filters over the top and I'm happy with the setup.

If I had the cash I'd go the VM's. I spoke to the Mikuni dealer here in Aus a few years back and he recommended VM's... said if I dialed it in right my little 450 would wake up real nicely.

The main issue with getting new ones is ganging them up with brackets, linkages, throttle etc.
