    Carb to Airbox boots/hose Question

    1979 GS1000S

    The old boots are pretty hard as you can imagine.
    I wish to replace them, and I've got the parts.
    My question is how do i remove and reinstall the metal band/ring that's inside the boot where it passes through the airbox.

    Part number 3 in diagram below.

    I have found it a LOT easier to remove them than to install them.

    If you look around the ring, you will see where it is split. Reach in with some needle-nose pliers, grab the ring on one side of the split, drag it over the other side, which will compress the ring a bit. Should be able to make it just enough smaller that you can pull it out.

    "Installation is the reverse of removal." Yeah, right.

    Actually, it's not too far off. I have had the best luck by compressing the ring in one hand and grabbing the overlapping ends with the pliers. With the intake tube properly located in the airbox, reach in with the ring and let it expand into place when it's in the right spot, between the ridges.

    Don't get frustrated with the first few (dozen) tries, you will eventually get it.

        I was about to say that. The new boots don't come with the split. I ordered 4 of the metal rings for my ES and don't need them (they weren't cheap either). Once you put a boot in you'll see if fits pretty tight without the rings.

          where did you find the carb-to-airbox boots? the part number for my 79 gs550 isn't shown on any diagram from my usual sources, including the one linked here. have been searching for awhile, and about to post when i saw this. thx,

            You definitely need those spring rings because these boots do shrink over time.

              I did it today, the old rings were not split, so I bent them and pulled them out.
              Straightened them out and reinstalled with a pair of needle nose and a little silicone grease, easy peasy

                They probably came as part of the box and not available separately , same as my bike.
                I used parts from a 750 which are.
                They are pretty much Identical, but I have not idea about a 550, sorry.

                      I did see that but I'm talking about the boot not the rings. The rings I've taken out in the past, and recently for my 1100ES have ridges on them. The original boots have slats cut in them that those ridges fit into, any new OEM boots I've seen do not have those pre cut slits in them. Not sure if all that makes sense.

                        Not sure I understand, but..
                        If you mean a pocket for the rings to sit in, no there was none on the new boots.
                        What appears to be one on the old boots i believe is just age , and the rings taking a seat over the last 40 years.
