Carb rebuild weirdness... rust and silicone

    1) why would the PO put solicone in the small air port/jet (right port in the left pic) ? This was only on #1 carb.
Wondering what they may have been trying to solve so what to watch for after this cleaning. I was able to get the silicone out. It was all the way into the channel

    2) how to get rust out of the bowl? Tag and ultrasonic cleaner no luck yet. Don't want to resort to abrasives until I check here

    3) ok all the carbs the large air jet was loose. Just another weird thing.

1981 GS750L - Owned since 1990 when graduated high school and since have been discovering all the things not disclosed by seller.
1983 GS750E - bought in 2016 as a rough runner to use while rebuilding 81L and then to combine with ES to make one good one
1983 GS750ES - bought in Toronto in 2015 on a lark as a non-runner, missing front cowling and exhaust - If you have a 1983 750ES front cowling let me know! Blue would be nice

      the beauty of previous owners!

That's not rust, there's no ferrous material there. It's residue from gas. Just scrub it off with a Scotchbrite or similar. I wet blasted some of mine, since it took just a few seconds

or try a little oven cleaner...but be sure to rinse it all away after.

Then, do the full carb clean. Imagine what all the passages look like

Napa carb cleaner in the gallon can is your friend and lasts a long time...wear gloves.

Get a cheap sand blaster gun with the hopper on top fro harbor freight but run baking soda through it (only). Soda blasting is great for soft metals and makes it look new. The soda encapsulates the grease and makes it fall away. Then just a hot water rinsing. But it's not gonna get through the passages. That's what a half dozen cans of brake or carb cleaner are for before hand. I just did carbs on my GS and a GSXR and I'm regretting not getting out the baking soda... always feeling rushed to get done I guess.

I'm curious about the silicone and hoping someone chimes in
