I found a guy parting out a 750G that has a tank in much better condition than mine, but he's unsure of what year it is. Based off the pictures and cast wheels, I suspect it's a 78 or 79. Where there any changes made from 77 to 78/9 that would prevent me from installing the newer tank on my 77 frame? I'd rather not have to make any modifications to the tank to get it to fit correctly. Any help is appreciated!

Tank differences?
I asked this question in my project thread but I figured I might get more answers here.

Ok interesting. So a 750L isn't a "chopper" styled bike with a peanut tank like an 850L is?
So I need to figure out if his is an E or an L. What's the easiest way to determine what model a 750 is?Last edited by 93Bandit; 07-06-2019, 07:50 PM.- 1983 GS850L ~ 30,000 miles and going up - Finally ready for a proper road trip!

All L's are the chopper style. the 77-79 was a 750 and it was a chain drive bike. They came out with the 850GL in 79 and it is based on the 750L, but is shaft driven. The later 850GL bikes may have the same tank, but I'm not certain if they are interchangable or not. I know they have CV carbs and with some models that may cause a petcock clearence issue. You should check the parts fiche to see what differences can be determined.:cool:GSRick

Here's the link to my 750 build. Pictures of my bike are in the first post. https://www.thegsresources.com/_foru...750-Cafe-Build
So I guess mine is 750(E)? If that's the case, then his must be as well because it's definitely not an L. I have an 850L and his looks nothing like it. The tank on the parts bike is similar looking to a G tank, so it must be an E. I'll go check it out in person and go from there. Thanks guys.- 1983 GS850L ~ 30,000 miles and going up - Finally ready for a proper road trip!

I believe that would be a 750C. Basically a cheaper 750E. The difference is the wire wheels and only a single brake on the front. Now the tanks that will fit with no work is the 77-79E tanks and the later 80-81 850-1000G tanks. They are a bigger tank, more fuel capacity, but they will fit no problem. Some like the look and some don't. I've had both and like both. This is the first year 850 with the same carbs as your bike. it is the same tank as the 80-81 850-1000. The 82-83 is different and i don't think will fit, but I'm not 100% on that.

To answer your original question, the 77-79 standard and E models all have the same tank

I see a bit of misleading information here.
1. There were no "L" bikes before 1979.
2. There IS a 750G, but it was a Japan-only model. Very few ever made it out of Japan.
3. The 850G started in 1979.
4. The 850GL started in 1980, and was a one-year only model. It was re-styled in '81 and continued to '83 with minor changes.
Any of the non-L 750 tanks BEFORE 1980 should fit. Rick says the 850G and 1000G tanks fit, I don't know that for sure, and that would only be up through the '81 model year. The 850G and 1000G tanks are the same, except for paint and striping. In '82, the 850G and 1100G tanks were considerably different and would not fit your bike.

Thanks for all the information guys. I'm going to check it out this week after work hopefully.
As for the question concerning 750/850 tank interchangeability, I happen to have an 81 850G that I could swap tanks with for the heck of it to see if it would fit.- 1983 GS850L ~ 30,000 miles and going up - Finally ready for a proper road trip!

The '81 850 would be the same as the '79 and '80 850s, and would have the best chance of fitting the 750.
Not sure what the fuel capacity is on the 750, but the 850 is 5.8 gallons.

I think the 750 tank is smaller. It doesn't look as tall in the back, like the tank swoops down sooner in the curve than on the 850 tank.
Either way, I'm hoping to get the tank and a few other parts from that guy as long as they're in good condition. I don't want to use my 850 tank because I intend on getting my 850 running again.- 1983 GS850L ~ 30,000 miles and going up - Finally ready for a proper road trip!

Although you don't want to use your 850 tank permanently, would you mind doing a test fit?
There has been quite a bit of guessing here, it woulde be nice to know for sure.
