    Complicated PETCOCK Question regarding .... 80-81 gs1100e

    History
I have a 1982 gs1100e that I Frankensteined into looking like a 78 gs1000. I was not able to use the gs1000 petcock because the body of the petcock stuck down too far and there is not much clearance between the bottom of the tank and the top of the carbs.

I was able to use the 82 gs1100e petcock although I did have to trim the lever down a bit in order to have clearance for it to turn and the square body of the petcock had to be slightly ground on one corner to fit.

    Now the question

I noticed a petcock on ebay for a 1980 gs1100e that appears to be much shorter and better for clearance. Not sure if it really is though, I cannot find details of size of petcocks other than hole spacing.

    80-81 GS850 GLT GS850L GS850GLT. 80-81 GS1100 ET/LT GS1100E GS1100L GS1100ET GS1100LT. 80-81 GS1000 ET GS1000E GAS1000ET. 1980 GS1000 ST GS1000S GS1000ST. 80-81 GS750 ET GS750E GS750ET. 80-81 GS750 LT GS750L GS750LT.

But note, this petcock does not have a handle. Did the petcocks on the 80-81 gs1100e work differently? Do they work on suction, have reserve etc?

The (dreaded) '80 petcock is not the solution to your problem unless you are willing to break out the welder.

Yes, it's shorter, but it also has a different bolt spacing, so it won't fit.

Fortunately, that (dreaded) petock was only in use for one year, and fortunately not on all models.
The shafties were spared that abomination.

ok, that answered that. Thank you Steve.

I have posted this before with no success, but if anyone knows of a petcock that will work with a body shallower than the 82 gs1100E, I would be thankful.

In fact, ebay has a $15 petcock for the gs bikes, but since they look like the 78 gs1000 petcocks I am assuming the bodies are too big also. I guess I can order an OEM 82 gs1100e petcock and shave the casing and trim the lever... but of course those arent just $15 and I hate to throw away money on something I will butcher.

I'll check the L petcock against the G petcock and let you know.

I might have a stock 82/83 petcock and I think I have a Pingel w/an adapter in my spare 82 tank. You are welcome to both of them and see if you can make one will work. I haven't looked at the Pingel to see if it has the Reserve function.

Which means that the 1000GL will have it, too.

Well, at least all the REST of the shafties were spared.

I was going to read the OPs post, but the red made my eyes ache since I use the dark forum style.
