    how important is this part?

    how important is part#4? when i first started taking this apart (9 months ago) i found it in my airbox just sitting and i was wondering what the hell is that doing in here, little to know it was supposed to be in one of the rubber tubes. is it a support so the rubber tube doesn't collapse on itself? anything i can make for it instead of ordering one online?

    Very important,,,, That's an o-ring.... Without it you will have air leaks and likely a hanging idle ......

      any chance theyd sell these at a hardware store, its the piece you put inside the rubber tube that holds its stability, sorry i keep calling it rubber tube im not sure about the correct term.

        just trying to save time everythings been going pretty well so aslong as one of the two shims i got for my no clearance valve is right ill be set to ride. but ofcourse if i have to order i have to, cant skip out on something now!

            no not that part i put all new intake o-rings, im talking bout the brass piece. its called a hose ring i just found out.

            i believe its brass atleast, dont know metals off my hand like that.

              Cycle Oring supplys the rubber oring in the intake boot (up against the head).
              THe item in question is the metal spring thing in the boot in the airbox. I suppose is something of an circular thing, something of a ring, but isnt an "o-ring".

                yes its a metal ring that isnt fully sealed so you can fit it in the boot that are mounted on your airrbox, once put in the right spot it expands giving the boot stability, but my question is howmuch and say if i left it off of boot 1 or 4 howmuch would it affect things?

                  Yes.

                  Maybe quickest source might be someone on ebay selling an airbox that has the boots yet. Could be any beat up rotted out one, the metal spring things should be good yet. Only concern would be if proper diameter for the 650 (which I cant tell you what) (but I think the 650s are some what unique to all the other GSes)

                      My thoughts on those are they are needed, but the bike would probably run OK without them if your carb rack fits nicely.
                      If the airbox pulls on the carbs when tightened up it could pull the boots out of place and cause an air leak.
                      They are not that expensive so why not buy from Suzuki?

                      Making your own would be a big time investment unless you got lucky and found the correct diameter tubing and you would probably damage your rubber boots trying to install them.

                      BTW They are made from steel not brass, they are zinc plated with a yellow chromate.

                        gonna order for-sure, wasnt trying to save money i guess just rushing putting it back together, but i dont like the sound of the bike running OK, thats not good enough.

                            If your intake tubes are old, they are likely a bit shrunken and hard. In their shrunken state, they can get pushed into, or pulled out of, the airbox when trying to mount the airbox to the carbs. The metal rings mount inside the tubes to keep them expanded so the groove on the outside of the tube mates with the edge of the airbox.

                            New intake tubes will mate up with the airbox and hold there quite well, leading you to think you might not need the expander rings, but after some time, they weill shrink, too, and will leave a gap. Install the rings.
