Checking the petcock is easy, remove the fuel line and open it up. If gas flows out you can assume it's working, be sure to have a container handy to catch any gas that flows out.1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)

second way: first is better IMO-less mess :get a flat lid/tray that fits under the carbs but is deep enough to hold a whole bowl full of gas and More...crack open a carb bowl drain screw...not all the way if you can help it because it's a compact place if you want to put the screw back in in a rush...Last edited by Gorminrider; 03-26-2020, 10:57 AM.

In this post we dont know if was running fine yesterday, or if has been sitting for 5 years, or if you are just now finishing significant changes.
(seems that some folks do know some of that)http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

this bikes been sitting 9 months, the oil was from the air filter itself checked that i think its from air pulling in getting some oil to come out of filter. oiled it the other day brand new air filter, i think my issue is what gormin said i dont have enough fuel in carbs, when i pressed starter engine was forsure giving a constant tone of a small rumble and u could see stuff coming out exhaust, gas or heat not smoke looked like gas. i have a extremely small sweat from the fuel valve wouldnt even notice it if you stared waiting for a drip. the prime function works forsure, and when i pulled my fuel line off it gas came out, but i have to test my vacuum line. wiating for battery to be charged but ill say it has to be small fixes nothing major, oil just cycled through engine i believe but not in airbox atleast not the half with the filter.
also airbox has hole cut out cuz some dumbass didnt fit the master cylinder correctly before me, so theres that too, decent size square whole maybe an inch and a half long and half an inch wide.
how long should i prime the carbs?Ian

With my '750 I only have to prime for a couple of seconds. Just long enough to get a reservoir of fuel in the carb bowls. Too long and you risk flooding the carbs.
Make sure you have a decent battery as well. If you have tried turning the engine over too many times and need to keep charging the battery then it might be best to get a fresh battery.
Without wishing to be rude, try posting one issue at a time in each thread. It gets a bit confusing when multiple replies to multiple issues are all mixed together.
Big thumbs up for getting this far. Having read your other posts you seem to be getting there, slowly, but still getting there.1978 GS750(E) I think

not rude at all, didnt seperate them much so yeah its just a mix of whats goin on not really organized.
hers one more thing id like to ask, so with my throttle cable, if i put it in the first hole of my throttle tube ( less length required) itll be loose the whole way tightening from the side next to the handlebar, if i put the cable on the hole that makes it stretch more, it sits well and barely any play before throttle cable starts getting pulled, but the whole frame piece that opens ur valves isnt sitting straight, just up a little but i dont know if its affecting my bike starting. heres some pics not the best view but u can see its a bit angled.Ian

Easy to check- just pull the breather and see if it's drippy.......Ian
