gs steve cleaned the carbs so i have no doubt its not his error, my idle is set at 1100 but when i rev itll go to about 2000, then eventually drop, my bike is also running on 2 cylinders at 1100 rpm, it runs on 1 and 2 but 3 and 4 arent working right away, and knowing how the carbs get tuned together it seems like they need adjusting. i could also not be getting enough fuel in cylinder 3 and 4 so i gotta check the fuel level. the throttle cable is fine and i did replace the intake o rings so i shouldnt have a cable or leak issue, i will check for leaks just to make sure. also i had it idle at 1500 for chuck to see if all 4 cylinders will work at that rpm, and while my engine didnt sound like a rotary, i still dont think all 4 were running together, but eventually it picked up in rpms after they warmed up i assume.Last edited by timebombprod; 04-28-2020, 04:11 PM.Ian

To help clarify the air leak issue, you need to also be sure of a good seal all the way from the cover of the airbox to the inlet of the carbs. On mine, I really need to take the time to make sure the rubber tubes that connect the carb throat to the airbox are in the proper position to create a good seal.1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)

why wouldnt the cylinders work at 1100rpm then 2 out of 4 will heat up, i get the issue of it rising but what if its not getting enough fuel to the 2, and its sucking in more air cuasing it to work a bit but not what it needs, so when it gets a certain amount of fuel flown to it, it rises up in rpm.Ian

Without being there it would be a matter (for me anyhow) of merely taking stabs as to WHY. The best course of action is, as always, to make sure you're solid in having the basics sorted properly before heading toward a more complex possibilities.
You're getting to the point with your project where the challenges really start. Diagnosing problems can get sketchy for even the most experienced riders sometimes. Keep at it and keep asking questions!1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)

hanging idle? is that when it goes to the higher rev and sit there, with the throttle all the way loose? didnt replace intake boots but they were fine felt good and had a sturdy but sure fit when i put the carbs back on, wasnt brittle except the thin layer of plastic/rubber where the bolts will go, but the boot tube itself was in great condition.
i have videos of it running and that happening, one time it was sitting all the way at 4 thousand rpms, also tuning the throttle cable just a bit could make it shoot up in revs, the reason i think fuel level could be something is because when i would tighten the cable bring rpm up, it could shoot up quick after that, meaning maybe enough air was coming in for the fuel to go in aswell. chuck hahn is the one who suggested me it could be that. need to start her back up soon and try these out. should be tomorrow.Ian
